New Topic

Okay, first and foremost I want to say keep this thread on topic. If you've got an off-topic question PM myself or mich or check out the website mich is putting together. There's a link to a live chat we can use to discuss ideas.

I'm going to throw my project brief in here so we can all get an idea of what's going on.

Proposal
To form a group of artists with the common goal of creating a musical album to release for public sale. Profits from this album will be donated to charitable organizations working to rebuild, recover and aid Haiti in the wake of the recent earthquake.

Organization

Mich and loansindi acting as project leaders, for the sake of organizational simplicity.
Members of the project will sign up in a designated thread in the Newgrounds BBS as well as via PM to loansindi. This dual-method signup will provide both public feedback to the direction of the project and allow a detailed member list to be maintained. A signup is required prior to participation for the sake of keeping things organized.

With a signup an artist is doing two things:

1) Declaring a commitment to the project

and

2) Making known their intended contribution. Obviously the project will require more than just musicians (regarding tasks in every aspect of production)

Let it be known that collaborative efforts are highly encouraged, so as to maximize the number of artists who can submit content to a relatively limited format. (Assume one 80 minute audio disc)

The Music

The music isn't constrained to a specific genre, style or content. Music should be at least marketable (that is to say, experimental and noise explorations are not appropriate for this project), but more importantly should be of high production value. The goal here is to put forward NG's very best musicianship in a positive light to create a product worth buying.

A panel will be formed of interested members to judge the 'quality' (purely in the sense of production value and marketability) and provide feedback to artists submitting music. Anticipate a panel of around five members. The panel will maintain musical diversity to assure the smallest bias possible.

The goal

To create a high-quality album to sell both in the NG store and locally. Ideally a production run of duplicates will be created that can be distributed to project members to sell. Use of a service such as CDBaby to provide both physical sales over the internet and in stores, and also digital downloads (both on their own service and on popular music portals such as itunes).

The license

Any and all music you submit to the project is released to be used in any manner seen fit to promote and advance the project. You retain the rights to use the songs as you please. Consider the work sent to the project to be under a CC Attribute license.

TL;DR

Go back and read that shit. Seriously. Right now.

Okay, so you're saying "What now?"

Post in this thread that you intend to participate. Then tell us what you expect to do for us. Write a song? Collab with someone? Want to be on the quality panel? Whatever.

THEN SEND ME A PM

If you fail to send me a PM then I will not consider you signed up and you will not receive information or be eligible to submit music or any other contributions. Organization is going to be key.

Okay, so make your post, send me a PM. Write some awesome music. I will keep you informed.

Damn, I just have one question:
How fast do you want the song to be done?
I just sat down with my guitar and immediately came up with a tune, rough lyrics.
I have no idea how fast I can set up my studio to record, I can get the song recorded by monday perhaps... Is that ok??

This is a -huge- project that's likely going to be at least a few weeks in the making. Don't rush yourself. Like I said, production value is key.

Roger. My acoustic productions mostly have a quite high quality, if I have the proper amount of time :-)
I'll send you a pm to sign up.

In between co-managing this, I will also write a track. It will be sort of a generic dance track, which easily appeals to people. The production value will be much higher than the latest one I submitted, as that one was made for the lulz.

Latest track: Only a Dusting [Ambient]

Remember kids, if you don't also PM me you won't be listed as a member of the project.

I would love being a part of this, and I'm willing to put the time - for the people in Haiti. But, I'm not sure I can qualify for Marketable music. Can you please tell me if it's even worth the effort? I won't get offended - Tis' be too important for Ego Games - but I do have a tight timetable, and I need to know whether I should even open up time for it. You know me and probably what my limits are, musically-wise. I can strech them a bit, but I ain't no Steve Vai. I'm a Blues/Jazz/Rock guitarist. That's about it.

You can always collab with someone to create a work that's more than just you.

My ears are at your service.

I have loads of experience in production as well and offer my services to any other FL savvy users who wish to collaborate on a piece for the album. My specialty genres are hard house, electro, hard trance, dnb, and dubstep.

I also have experience in other production services that could be of help such as making feasibility checklists, copyright verifications, biography/demo reels, mastering($$$), and CD replication($$$).

Then I'm in. I'll think of a song. Does it have to be Disaster-Related, Lyrics-wise?

No. In fact, any song about the disaster will be rejected out of hand.

Yeah, figures. I feel stupid, looking back asking that. N00b energy took over me. Sorry.

How about a remix of Mad World? I think it's appropriate, and besides I already started working on it.

I don't know what that is, but original content is better.

So I don't know if it meets the standard of 'The Best of Newgrounds' but it's pretty good and I have it if you want it.

I'm estimating at least a couple weeks before we're ready to finalize a track listing. You can spend more time on it.

Also, can we submit any previous work? Or do we have to make something specifically for this project?

I'd rather the album was made up of new tracks (ideally the artists involved will wait to release them independently [i'm not requiring an exclusive license] until after the album has been up for sale for a while). That said, if you've got an existing track that you really think would benefit the project, feel free to sign up and submit a demo of that.

I'll see if me and F-777 can collab on a track

I'd like to sign on for this but it sounds like you all have a stick up your ass over quality.

this would be my submission but it doesn't seem like there is any leeway.

I would really like to help.

I would love to compose a song for this album. I would hope it would be a collaborative effort with some other people I know, but If not than I can just do it on my own.

Exactly, the idea would fail if we just allowed everyone to compose for it.

We have to overwhelm people with such an amazing album, that they totally forget they are helping to the Haiti foundation. It will be great!

Never mind album space constraints.

Remember kids, if you collab, then more of you can be involved in the production. We've got 80 minutes to play with.

If it comes down to deciding what songs end up on the album, collaborations will get preferential treatment.

I'm gonna let this thread coast over the weekend and based on the number of people involved I will set a date to close entrance on monday, the 18th.

Didn't someone already make a topic about doing something like this?
Look's like you completely ripped it off...

It's about helping out a country in need.
Not stealing ideas to getting publicity, right?
