All nighters?

All nighters? Mar 14, 2010

I simply can't pull an all nighter. I don't know how people do it. Once it gets to about 1:00 in the morning my body just completely shuts down and I'm falling asleep no matter where I am. Then I sleep for the perfect 8 hours, wake up, and then can't sleep all day.

How do you guys manage without the sleep? I can't function with my everyday activities if I don't. I really do try to stay up too. There are times at parties where I'll be wide awake, but once it hits a certain time I'm just down for the count.

Does it have something with me not consuming any caffeine whatsoever in a day? Or am I just turning into an old man or something?

I'm the same way, my body just shuts down at around the same time every day. Although I vary in my sleep cycle from 6 hours to 10 hours, but overall the pattern remains the same.

I think the older we get the less we force ourselves to stay up overnight. I used to be able to, but my body is used to being asleep by 11 and up at 4.30am for work. It sucks.

When I was working 9-5 I found it very difficult to stay up past about 1am. But nowadays I sleep basically whenever I am tired, whether that be 4am or 7pm.

I think it just has a lot to do with how you spend your day.

Hm, my father and my roommate both have this problem where they don't think they sleep at all. They'll stay up every single hour of the night and then sleep 10 hours during the day. My father is retired so it's fair game for him, but my roommate misses all of his classes almost every day of the week.

They still both think they can't sleep though even though they get more sleep than I do. There must be something about sleeping during the day that just isn't quite the same as sleeping during the night.

Used to be in that situation. I guess it was the scent of money that got me up every morning for work. School had no such incentive, no matter how hard i did try to get up for class.

Well, I do not drink any coffee, and staying up until at least 5:00 - 7:00 AM is easy for me. If I stay up the whole night, I'll probably sleep during the day.

Yeah, about 5-6 years ago when I was your age I could do it as well, but I'm only in my 20s so it can't be my age. Maybe my body is just in some sort of routine. It doesn't matter what I do during the day. I could spend the entire day sitting around on the computer or I could spend my day at the gym, running, and then out with friends and I still get just as tired as any other day.

I never understood how some people go to bed at like 10PM.

When I was a small kid (about 10 years old) I started going to bed past 11, which is bad, because now I go to bed at like 1AM during school days and like 3AM at weekends. And yet still I have trouble falling asleep.

So I can pull an all nighter quite easy and the only downside is that I feel kinda sleepy during the day.

I'm in a similar position. I have to sleep at some point as time goes on, though I have had very late nights before where I go to sleep around four or five in the morning. That's late for me. Late nights like that are usually either results of having people over and having a few drinks or jet lag rather than things I force upon myself rationally. I simply can't go much further and have a meaningful experience the next day if I stay up that late. If I do that, I simply lounge in bed all day.

I think it's about me having worked my body into a routine too, though I've never really been the sort to do it regularly, not even when I was in high school. I drink a fair amount of coffee and I'm not terribly active, but I'll feel tired around two in the morning at the latest on most occasions. The fact is that I don't need to pull all-nighters and that I know I can do work better if I've rested well.

Two of my housemates pretty much force all-nighters upon themselves when there's work to be done. I don't know how they do it or even keep doing it, because it tends to make them feel ill and stressed. My curiosity here might be related to the fact that I like to get work done slowly and carefully way beforehand, but I don't know.

I go to sleep at 5:30 AM on non-work days.

If I'm by myself, there is no possible way I can stay up all night. If there is a friend with me, I can talk for hours so it is much easier.

I go to bed at about 20:00, and I get up at around 2:30-3:30

I'm not a nighter. I sleep very long.

If I want to pull an all-nighter, I'll have some caffeine-based drinks ready (coffee; tea; pepsi; cola; whatever) and have something planned to keep my sudden hyperactivity entertained. I've not tried pulling an all-nighter for so long, though... I might have one next weekend OH GOD I'M LIVING THE FAST LIFE.
