A few months ago, I was in a slump. I didn't feel like playing any video games at all. I felt burnt out for some reason. I know it usually happens to every player, but it was something that never happened to me. The problem was never "I don't feel like playing a game" the problem was always "which game should I play today".
I was in this slump for a good long while, which drove my brother crazy, because he constantly needs to be doing something so with over 100 games to choose from the fact that I didn't want to play had him both worried about me and was making him insane.
Now I have had some personal problems and that is one of the reasons for my lack of interest in games, some of you I may have talked to about said problems. However my brother got Minecraft for his XBOX 360. I never played Minecraft, but I heard stories and was shown worlds. It did look interesting, but nothing entirely appealing for me. He ended up dragging me into a chair and handing me a controller to play this game with him when I honestly did not want to.
After a while, we built a fort together on top of a mountain. We went mining, found some nice things. I decided it was time for me to build a place of my own, so I built a little log cabin beside a size-able lavafall. It was all nice. Then I started mining and found a lot of interesting things. As I explored the world there was just so much to do and so little time. It was a game that brought my video game mojo back so to speak. I have been playing video games just about non-stop now. There is a question to this though...
What is it about this video game that makes it fun? From my first impressions, from the stories I've heard to what I have seen people create, I saw a First-Person Level Editor combined with an open-ended adventure. After playing it, my thoughts and opinions on it haven't changed it is still a First-Person Level Editor with an open-ended adventure. So what is it about it that I enjoy and that others enjoyed? What is it about this game that has fueled my video game senses to a point that they haven't truly been at since 1998? I can't explain it.
The only thing I could possibly see is that everybody is creative to some extent and the game is only limited to that of your imagination. I personally have a broad imagination and so the possibilities seem endless to me much like the game. It is a perfect mirror into my player soul. That doesn't completely explain it though. For those who have mined I implore that you please tell me more.
