Max suffers more then he deserves to. He can't be seen crying, but one could call him a crocodile tear jerker, meaning that anything can get him to cry and he'll throw his sadness around (as a joke) to get people to react to him. He does it so much that most people can't tell when he's really fucked up and needs some emotional support. As a Loyalist, you can't be seen crying, because the Princess doesn't cry and you shouldn't either.

Most would also call his actions cowardly, as he's often finding ways to avoid fighting or running and hiding. His incontinence would suggest he has a hard time keeping it together. The nice thing about pissing yourself is that once it dries noone can tell you did what you did. Maybe, it's just that he has no control over his emotions and he's rather passionate about what he believes in. Maybe it's society's fault for making him paranoid about being torn apart by mindless marauders at a young age. Knowing that every Knight before him has died horribly and if he's not able to keep his wits about him, he'll end up as a zombie slave to one of the bosses.

When Max HAS to fight and gets angry enough to fight back, he's lost his jolly agreeable nature. Get this sad fellow some edibles, please? Maybe that'll help.
