Sonic and Tails in my style

Share

Originally completed in February.

It was a daunting task drawing Sonic in my own style rather than replicating the games' art style, as the characters' designs lean heavily into the cartoony style of rubberhose animations, while I lean more into a slightly more realistic-looking stylised art style. Though, I did make it a little easier for me by taking inspiration from Sonic's movie design (and taking notes on what not to do with the original movie design). Sonic is naturally a fast runner who hits like a truck, and I wanted to draw some form of muscle definitions without tossing him straight into the uncanny valley, so I gave him both small curvatures in his legs, sharp lines in his arms and a square torso to balance out the stylistic and realistic aspects of the design. Tails was much easier to redesign because he lacks some of Sonic's design quirks like the conjoined eyes and the side mouth, and since he's a young boy half Sonic's age, I drew him pudgier and with next-to-no muscle definition in his limbs. I also emphasised the mechanic side of him by giving him thick work gloves and blue steel-toed boots that complement his orange fur.

In the second image, I shaded the characters in the style of Ghost Trick (I love the game, buy it when you have the chance).

Thanks! I used to visit Newgrounds all the time when I was younger, so better late than never to join its art community!
