From what I get, the first set is the Classic Mario from the Super mario show and the Classic Sonic from the SatAm cartoons.
The Second is the first appearance of Mario in an animated Movie (the Great mission to rescue Princess Peach) and the Sonic is from the Japanese animated intro Sega CD.

The sonics are actually inspired by the adventures of sonic the hedgehog and the sonic OVA designs but yep, you got the clear picture! :]
I don't exactly understand. what are the two different images supposed to communicate?

the Mario's are doing the pose similar to one of the promotional renders for Super Mario 64 and the Sonic's are doing a similar pose to one of the promotional renders for Sonic Adventure DX
