Do you draw over a character reference or do you use the pixel grid from start to finish?

Tried making pixelart of a few game characters a while back. Felt like a fitting day to post.

This was a while ago but if I remember correctly. I drew an outline which I shrunk down and made a pixel outline for the Morrigan one.
For the others I basically drew out the shapes in pixels and then added details as I went along.
I looked at refrences for all three. The Morrigan one especially is basically just a remake of the game sprite.
