These odd looking plants have a large cavity on the inside of their bodies. The sap that fills this cavity harbors bioluminescent bacteria that provide the plant with the energy required for photosynthesis. The bacteria live off the minerals extracted from the soil by the plant's root system, which can extend as far as a half mile into the soil. Once a year, the plants bud and produce large flowers which engorge at the base and sprout numerous seed pods. The flowers are settled on a nest of sharp thorns that helps keep animals from damaging the delicate sacs. It is rumored that they developed from the roots of dead trees.
