So... Here's my entry for Draw with Jazza's Isolation-themed art competition!

First of all, I'll leave all the important stuff right here at the beggining.

WIP's

-#1 The process of making the piece:

Please let me know if there's something wrong with the links :)

ABOUT ME & THE PIECE (You can stop reading here.)

I'm Alejandro Torres, a 17 y/o Mexican student who loves to draw. This is the second time I participate in a Jazza's art competition so far; Although you can't see in this profile my previous entry because this is a different account.

Anyways, I've made this with a crappy Intuos small tablet, and TBH I'm a little bit sick of using it. That's why I'm participating.

Since I want to dedicate to drawing full time, I always wanted a screen tablet to make things more comfortable to me. BUT, I'm still a student and currently can't get a job (Here in Mexico the law establishes that you can't get a formal job before being 18).

In the other hand, my family can't really afford a decent screen tablet right now. We have a lot of investments with my brother's college.

Although I think that the prize of the competition is a little bit of "overkill" for my needs, I no longer qualify to the beginner category, so yeah... I'll take it, anything works at this point.

I enjoyed making this, since the planning to the finished result; although I had to take long breaks so I didn't get sick of drawing with my crappy intuos XD

The drawing shows a soldier who lost his only two squad teammates in the middle of nowhere, he knows that no one will find him there, so he burries his friends and rests defeated in front of them. I wanted to portray a feeling of loneliness (or something like that, I can't find the correct word) in the piece overall. I think i achieved it by the use of the red flare, which is the only strong light source in the whole thing.

I had a little bit of a struggle in the coloring phase, i couldn't imagine all the colors working together, so I decided to start the coloring in Black & White and then assign the respective colors via clipping masks. I ended with 53 layers in the photoshop file. It took me about 34 hours to make if we count the making of preliminar sketches and creation of the mood board (you can see them in the WIP #1).

If you're wondering, here's the software I used.

Photoshop CC2018 + Coolorous plug-in: digital sketching and painting/coloring.

Clip Studio Paint: Lineart. This program's lines are way crisper than Photoshop's.

I like it! The idea is good and the backgrounds are very well done.
But I think the right side of the picture is a little bit too dark, making the flare – not the soldier – the main focus of the drawing. Also, the soldier's bent left arm doesn't seem completely right (proportionally).

In my opinion, red colour doesn't exactly portray loneliness… a colder colour might, or you could zoom out a bit to show the soldier kneeling on a vast, empty snow plain.
Of course, don't change anything now – I actually prefer it like this, but red is a warm, comforting colour which isn't good for expressing cold, emptiness, loneliness; if that's what you intended (it'd be similar if you drew him sitting next to a campfire).

P.S.: No need to upload "a proof" that you drew it (unless somebody actually expresses doubts) and the drawing process could be included in your description here – usually, you want to upload only finished works as separate art submissions.
On your art page, it's going to look more impressive if you have four good, finished works rather than four works and ten throwaway sketches/photos.

In5omioStudios responds:

Thanks for the feedback! I apreciate it a lot.
Previously I considered leaving the WIP images in the description (they are necessary to be qualified in the competition), but in the rules/guidelines, it only says that you must link to a WIP image. Since it only says "a link", I'm going in the safe way... I really don't want to be disqualified.
About the "proof" image, yeah... I already removed that. I reconsider it and realized that it isn't really necessary.
Regardless, I'll take you're advise on how to keep my portfolio "clean/impressive". Even though im not really interested to make it here on Newgrounds.

Again, thanks for the help!
Have a nice day/night!
