Lane had CIPA (inability to feel pain) until he had an accident (or cure, depends on how you look at it) where the broken parts in his nervous system got reconnected.

Now he is able to feel pain for the first time and obviously it's not the most comfortable feeling.

He tries to numb the pain, but maybe he is taking the pain killers a bit too sensitively to any discomfort.
