First conceived in the New Carthage Hegemon in the year VY 0035, Navigators serve as living all-purpose detectors, early warning detectors, communication hubs, and guides through the darkest reaches of colonized space. In order to provide the amount of psychic energy required to maintain the power without overwhelming the senses, Navigators are perpetually suspended within a steady supply of Aether, expanding their consciousness, allowing them to see, hear, and sense the thoughts of living beings within at least 400 kilometers. Aether's preservative properties also puts the Navigator's body into a state of stasis, allowing them to operate for long periods of time without the need for stopping.

Previously trained exclusively by the Hegemon's famed Miqdeh Ihtot sisterhood of psychic priestesses, Nordstjernen Academy has since become the first outside source to train a new generation of Navigators. Among them is one Maya Valen, a young psychic with great potential. Thrust into conflict and falling in with the crew of the experimental Soviet command frigate the KSS Voskhod, Maya guides the ship and her crew of special operations soldiers and mercenaries in their continuing mission to maintain order throughout Earth and her colonies.
