RIP Akira Toriyama
HO HO HOPE you become a Newgrounds Supporter this year!
We're working hard to give you the best site possible, but we have bills to pay and community support is vital to keep things going and growing. Thank you for considering!
Probably the best example of what kind of wild stuff I can come up with if I frequently step away from an illustration for a while and come back to it with fresh eyes. What started as a simple exercise of drawing Godzilla from reference (based on the original rubber puppet version, of course) then became a whole scene when I somehow decided to draw a morbidly-obese Pikachu running away from him and referencing the "AUGH IS GODZILLA" bit from Austin Powers" Goldmember next. Then I found out that one of my favorite artists, Akira Toriyama died, and I decided this should ultimately turn out to be a tribute to his one-of-a-kind storytelling and art style by drawing Godzilla's reign of terror ultimately being stopped by Super Saiyan Goku and Metal King Slime (from Dragon Quest, a series that is hugely under-rated in the United States and I personally like more than Final Fantasy for sticking to its turn-based RPG roots).
Admittedly, I've always found Akira Toriyama's style particularly in the Dragon Ball series to be too "hard" for me to even attempt to replicate, plus my parents didn't let me watch Dragon Ball Z and GT as a kid or even as a teen (not even the heavily-censored English dubs on Cartoon Network's Toonami bloc), so I discovered Akira Toriyama's unique vision much later than most. My wobbly drawing of Super Saiyan Goku is hardly the best-looking tribute you'll find on this website, but I hope I sufficiently communicated how much I've grown to absolutely adore Toriyama-san's bold art style once I did get to experience Dragon Ball, Dragon Quest and even Tobal No. 1 as an adult!
RIP Akira Toriyama
I'm still really sad he's gone. It always seems like the really gifted individuals are taken away from us too soon...
