I dont understand why you dont just paint the whole thing in photoshop?? Are you using a graphics tablet? if you are....for smooth strokes and blending.... use the pressure sensitivity function :) .....if ur going for that i mean.

This is the...fifth tentacle picture I've painted this month :O
Got the idea from the video game F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origins!
This took me about 4 hours, but I hope it was worth it!
I used my beloved Bamboo and the software "Corel Painter Essentials 4" (For the editing I used "Adobe Photoshop Elements)
I'm only a n00b, so don't rage at meh :L
But anyway, I hope you like it!
