People are so mean to urban birds! They're scrappy, and their lifestyles and food sources aren't glamorous like others, but that's because the concrete jungle is a harsh place that doesn't facilitate nature getting extravagant! It's upsetting to run into lil' critters eating garbage or the twisted flesh of the old ones, sure, but that's what they've got, and I appreciate them making the world around us more lively.

I had a piece of a sandwich left, so I wanted to feed it to the seagulls, but the fishermen stopped me. They said they're shore rats, twisted from eating foul things that wash ashore, and it's better to stay away from them or I might catch something.
