T-39M76 mod.1940, medium tank

Share

T-39M76 mod. 1940, WWII era medium tank of Eurasian Confederation armed forces. Concept for my speculative history project Fortress of Outcasts. Produced since February 1940 to September 1944 when it was replaced by T-39 mod. 1944. Armament - 76.2 mm gun, 12.7 mm Korobenko AA heavy machine gun, two 7.62 mm Saidov general purpose machine guns (coaxial and hull-mounted). Armor - homogenous steel, cast turret (single cast, in 1941-1942 pressed steel turrets were also produced), hull - cast and rolled elements welded together. Since 1943, all units were retrofitted with external braces for installation of additional spaced armor elements. Some batches were equipped with experimental anti-spall internal screens made from several types of materials - rubber foam, bakelite plywood, and phenolic resin combined with various types of fiber - cellulose, glass fibers and even asbestos; all types did not show an outstanding performance. Due to the extensive use of biological and chemical weapons by Axis coalition members and their satellites, since 1941 all produced tanks were equipped with air filtering/regeneration systems. Engine - ZMC V12 naturally aspirated, liquid cooled diesel (in 1941, due to the diesel engine shortages some vehicles were equipped with multi fuel radial engines made by conversion of aircraft air cooled engines). All units were equipped with radio stations and intercoms. Suspension - torsion bars, rubbered roadwheels and rubbered tracks (in the late 1940 - 1941 tanks were fitted with unrubbered tracks due to disruption of logistical chains from colonies of allied states, mainly British, French and Dutch Empires; in August 1941 the production of rubberized tracks was restored in connection with the establishment of the production of synthetic rubber by members of Eurasian Confederation). Transmission - frontal position, mechanical (experimental hydro-mechanical transmission proved to be unsuccessful during 1942 trials). In the late 1946, during the final stage of war, many tanks of this model were retrofitted with night vision devices as well as Ktyr ATGM launching units.
