S.S. Anne Remake TVA Comparison

Share

Felt like it'd be cool to make a comparison gif of the S.S. Anne's Bow in both the original Pokémon Red/Blue and my ROM hack, Pokémon Master Version. I patched together genuine screenshots from the games in an emulator to create what I call a TVA (total viewable area) snapshot.

It was a goal of mine to keep the walkable area exactly the same as it was in the original, which was a bit tricky while keeping the front of the ship nice and round to match the miniature version of the ship (included as a bonus image in the gallery for comparisons). In the end, throwing a few crates in there helped to sell the look and feel while still feeling on theme. I'm really maxing out the Gameboy Color's VRAM with this one, leaving maybe only two tiles of map space unused by map assets, and using every background palette available to me.

The hack is nearing completion and I'm super excited to share it with you all, so I thought I'd start posting some public sneak peeks. If you like this type of thing, be sure to show me some love and I'll be back with more real soon!

This is a *massive* step up from the original map - I would've never thought in a million years you could cram something so good into a GBC.

NickJam responds:

I'll admit, it's far from practical under typical circumstances. There's a reason I waited until the hack was well over 90% completion before implementing this: using up this much space to create a tileset and blockset for a map that appears one time in normal play is not a wise decision.

That being said, now that all the maps are designed and most events implemented, I knew I had the space to cram it in and decided to shoot for the moon!
