Untraditional Crayola Snow Leopard

This is my entry for Jazza's Challenge of the Month.

I recently found a box of crayons buried in the deepest darkest corners of my house that I surely never planned on doing anything with. At least, not until the theme was posted for the August COTM.

To make things more interesting, I decided to focus on one of the least used colors in the box- white. I chose to work in reverse on dark paper to get the best use of it. The first subject that came to mind was a snow leopard.

I found crayons a much bigger nuisance than I remembered, as it wouldn't layer as thickly as I needed and clumped constantly. I used Bestine, a rubber cement thinner, as solvent to try and even them out. This worked to an extent, but I still had white flecks scattered throughout the piece. I attempted to compensate by adding flurries of snow, so that the flecks might be taken as small flakes.

All in all, "I really like how this turned out." ;)

When I first saw it, I thought, "This digital art is so realistic." however, I went to read the description and my reaction was "crayons? WHAT?!"

PaisleyPerson responds:

Ahh, thank you! It's definitely not my norm but it was a really challenging and fun project! It made me want to branch out even more :)

This kitty is pretty impressive. the texture of the fur really got me, nice work !

PaisleyPerson responds:

Thanks a lot! Cheap crayons don't lay down much pigment and are kind of hard to work with, but I'm happy with the end result.
