Moody and surreal
it's a shame this hasn't had a review yet, especially from someone who knows more about art than I do. I really like this because it's disjointed and the centrepeice of the guillotine drips apprehension. The masked man looks like a sinister fairground attendant, as if the guillotine is the new ride in thrills. Captivating drawing, and I image it looks even better in the flesh, as this has been scanned in? The perspective is skewed well- the way that cathedral is leaning over through the arch of the guillotine and the curves of the guillotine base and the hill make it look like some kind of surreal mess you'd never, ever want to visit.
