some Newgrounds characters in a horror style

Share

Made this a while back, so I thought it was about time I'd share it here.

I tried drawing some NG characters in a horror style, though you may notice that it isn't very detailed. This is because I wanted to go in the direction of the designs being simple, but at the same time, still being noticeably freaky. I also experimented with washed out colors a little bit, hence why their color schemes are more dull than usual.

I was kinda trying to go for a Tim Burton-esque feel, but I guess you could also say that this is more or less my attempt at doing so.

Anyways, here are the characters individually, along with the reasons why I designed them the way they are here:

Pico (and Cassandra), from the Pico series:

Pico's a bit rough here... and for a good reason. Throughout his childhood, he's had to face monsters out to kill him, and obviously it's gonna leave him with scars, both physical and mental. Cassandra (or at least an outline of her) is next to him because she's meant to represent his trauma (and for being the one who pretty much fucked up his life), always watching over Pico, and never leaving his side, leaving Pico to be a shadow of his former self.

Captain John, from the Tankmen series:

Captain wasn't too hard to design, and the concept itself was relatively simple: fighting in a war for years has depleted his sanity, and the constant pain he's had to go through has caused him to be in a zombie-like state, not caring about anything at this point. The other Tankmen are also like this, sadly enough, though Captain's gotten the worst of it.

Alien Hominid, from... well, Alien Hominid:

Now for Alien, I tried making his design doll-like, to emphasize that he's a tiny little critter... who can also kill without hesitation. Not much more to say here, but to add to his alien (no pun intended) nature, he's a lot less detailed than the other characters here.

Hank J. Wimbleton, from Madness Combat:

Hank's concept is probably too obvious, but to put it shortly, he's a professional killer on his own self. He doesn't hesitate with action, and the blood splatters don't even hinder him anymore. As far as he's concerned, he has to keep his face hidden so the AAHW won't track him down so easily... though the goggles might either be a dead giveaway, or an actual warning to whoever comes across him during the dead of the night.

P-Bot:

Not much to say about P-Bot here, other than I wanted to make him a killer robot of sorts, so yeah.

Darnell, from the Pico series:

iu_607131_10501143.webp

Darnell's concept isn't too surprising; the ragged clothes give you the impression that the kid's tested out his explosive materials, yet he doesn't care too much to even be bothered by it. He's armed, and he's certainly ready to blow stuff up whenever he feels like it. Thankfully, he can patch his clothing up, but all that matters to him is fire, and fire he will make, no matter the cost.

Convict, from Pico vs Convict (though I based his design here off of his appearance in Newgrounds Rumble):

iu_607132_10501143.png

Convict's design here wasn't really based on anything about his character, though I wanted to make him look a bit more "mature", if you will. The smoking pipe also gives the ambiguity if he can really be trusted, and the stuff falling from his eyes are also meant to be a mystery; are they tears? Oil? Blood? Nobody knows, just like how we don't know much about Convict himself...

And lastly, Nene, from the Pico series:

iu_607133_10501143.webp

Another concept that speaks for itself. Nene's wearing a ballerina-like outfit to represent a "dance" of sorts... or rather, a dance of death she's always apart of (which is meant to deconstruct the running gag of Nene dying), hence the rope tied around her neck. Still, even if she's horrifying to some, Nene still tries to appear cute, hence the seal grasped in her hand and the uncanny smile on her face; she wants others to be happy, even if everything else about her isn't.

And those were my attempts at making NG characters in a horror style, plus the concepts behind them. Keep in mind that I made these a long time back (if I recall, it was in either November or December), so that's why the art may look a bit... off compared to the other drawings I posted here, to say the least. Still, I'm proud of these, and I might redesign these horror designs in the future, if anyone's interested (hell, I might even make more NG characters in a horror style, but for now, you can have these guys).

we need a part 2

PrincessElis responds:

I might make one when I feel up for it, at least! I'm kinda unsure on what other NG characters I can make on this style, though. Still planning on that.

gives nene a hug

PrincessElis responds:

true

she really needs one

These are very great and creative desgins, I'm just imagining how another characters may look like in this horror style (now that you have mentioned Tim Burton, I'm starting to imagine a Pico's School movie directed by him, lol)

PrincessElis responds:

True! A Tim Burton-styled Pico movie would look awesome! (Though now I'm kinda interested by how creepy the penilians would look in his style...)
