It's Shima Luan from Super Planet Dolan!
There was a new Super Planet Dolan video up today discussing what it's like to try to make cartoons in 2019, the effort involved in trying to survive in the Youtube ecosystem as an edutainment producer and general animator, and the role of connections and skills in the realm of indie animation.
As any webcomic artists and game devs and daytime animators struggling to get their side projects going can attest, while all the new tech makes these options more open to anyone than it's ever been, the market still isn't exactly friendly to artists, and just trying to get by is already a struggle. Trying to chance after dreams stays hard.
There's also this deceptively named video Brookes Eggleston about the function of art in hobbyists's lives, and how easy it is to tail off into depending on notifications and feedback to validate one's emotional worth and losing whatever goal or drive got the artist to create to begin with. This is something I've been wrestling with again lately, and I find reviewing the video every couple of days helps me recenter my goals.
