The Imperial Guard relief force marched through the city gates with crowds of the native inhabitants looking on. But there was little cheering or celebrating.
The grim-looking army was not the angels of salvation that the people had thought they would be. Rather, they were silent, lifeless beings that spared the people not even a single glance as they marched by. The peoples faces grew nearly as dreary as the soldiers masks as they realized that their saviors were not like angels, but more like walking corpses.
But through the crowd of bleak and cheerless faces, a bright and sunny one appeared.
'Why is everyone so afraid of them,' she thought, 'when they're here to save us? We should be thankful.'
She leaned over the side and reached out to the nearest passing soldier, holding one of the summer flowers she had gathered.
'These are for someone else, but you can have one.' she said cheerfully.
The soldier hesitated for a moment, looking at the gift being presented to him, then he moved back into formation. He didn't take it, but she was sure that he wanted to.
Her grandmother frantically pulled her back and began scolding her. She didn't listen, she just put the flower back with the rest and stepped back, her smile unchanged.

I love you man!!
This bring back memorys when I first got into warhammer I saw kriegs as my fav because they are quiet, unyielding warrior the lore behind them is fascinating and I saw this picture and I thought in this grim dark world there was a little bit hope out there.
I remember seeing this on Deviant Art aaaaaaaaaaaaaaages ago, and I love it then as much as I do now, the lines are incredibly clean and crisp looking, and the Death Korps troopers marching in unison looks very....right. I'm really glad I managed to find this piece to give proper kudos to the artist who drew it :)
Nice picture. Really looks WWII-inspired.
Seriously, Krieg soldiers look like WWI/WWII Germans IN SPACE.
As it seems to me, all the setting of 40K is basically exaggerated Galactic WWII. Imperium is The Third Reich, Militaristic Japan and Soviet Union AT THE SAME TIME. They worship Emperor like Japanese, xenophobic like Nazi and iron-fisted totalitarians like Soviets.
Both 1984 and WH40K were created in Britain as reflection of real WWII horrors.
And also WH40K can be called anti-religious because nowhere religion is portrayed in such horrible and gruesome way. The Emperor's cult is very close to medieval christianity with knights, crusades, witch hunts, racks and stakes and killing people in the name of God. Chaos religion is just typical "lovecraftian satanism" with tentacles and human sacrifices. Orks are just barbarians. Every images of religion are very unpleasant and covered in blood.
Warhammer 40K is the most gritty fictional universe. And it seems to be more realistic than Star Wars despite this is dark fantasy/lovecraftian horror/space opera hybrid.
It even seems that OUR ACTUAL FUTURE CAN BECOME RATHER SIMILAR!!!
