Although pretty horrible looking, they are rather playful and sociable. The Whack-a-Jak hyenas are distinguishable from the large clumps of armored mud blanketing their backs. Rolling around in the wet dirt of their home biome, mixed with the dense fur on their backs, results in a thick armor capable of protection from predators, but also protection from their ability to tuck and roll around the terrain like an armadillo.
They are scavengers, but only a truly desperate whack-a-jak would attack a large living thing. If not, it'll only watch and mockingly chortle.
