So people are familiar with the tale of Mulan..mostly because of the Disney movie, but still. Hua Mulan (Fa Mulan in the Disney version)the tale of a young Chinese woman who takes her father's place in the army when foreign invaders attack China, where she must disguise herself as a man. After fighting for years she brings honor to her family. Though some versions don't end well for her, but hey here we're here to talk about the Disney version which is what this pic is based on. So for those that don't know Mulan is one of my favorite Disney movies, infact it has a more personal impact for me, but that's a different story there. I'm also a big World War II buff so I thought a way to modernize Mulan was to set it during the Second World World more specifically the Second Sino-Japanese War. The China Front of World War II is probably the most overlooked front of the entire war, with it being overshadowed by the Americans in the Pacific, but it was the longest and the bloodiest of the warThroughout the 1930s, Japan had territorial ambitious and wanted to kick the Western powers out of Asia and conquer the continent for themselves. In 1931, Japan would invade the Northeastern China region of Manchuria and in July 1937 two years before the Nazis invade Poland and four years before the Japanese attack on Pear Harbor, Japan would invade the rest of China. China at the time was going through problems such as a bloody civil war between the Nationalist Government and the Communists. Despite being having more troops than the Japanese, the Chinese military was poorly trained and poorly equipped. Because of this the Japanese managed take key cites such as Shanghai, Beijing and Nanjing, the capital of China at the time. Here the Japanese would unleash a terror onto the populace. Because the Japanese thought of themselves to be superior to the Chinese, the Japanese would commit acts of looting, murder and rape onto the Chinese. Chinese leader of at the time Generalissimo Chiang Kai Shek, would enact a couple of policies. For starters he would make an uneasy alliance with his enemies, the communists led by Mao Zedong, second there would be a conscription where many people were forced to fight against the Japanese. Despite that the Chinese were still in poor shape to fight the Japanese. At first the Chinese were supported by Nazi Germany, but due to their alliance with Japan they pulled out, however the tide started to turn for the Chinese when the United States was pulled into the war and supported the Chinese with better weapons and supplies. Not to mention the entrance of the United States pulled Japan's best troops from China to fight the Americans in the Pacific. That being said the Chinese would keep on fighting the Japanese until Japan's surrender in September 1945. 14 million Chinese would die during the Second World War.So you can see how Mulan can be set in the Second World War, instead of the Huns, it's the Japanese, and instead of ancient weaponry, it's the weaponry of the WW2 and just update the uniforms and clothes and replace the Emperor with the Generalissimo and you pretty much of Mulan but in WW2. Though the first line of make a man song would not be politically correct. "Let's get down to business..to defeat the Japs!" Yeah not sounding too good
