Doing all of these must make you
Today's subject was @TheStamenBoy, I thought his artstyle could be very interesting to analyze, because at surface level we seem to share some similarities, yet the end result is quite different, so I decided to further investigate, was not disappointed with my discoveries.
Preparation:
Sooo I downloaded a bunch of pics for reference, as per usual, and I noticed Stamenboy draws a lot of mechas and girls, I have no mechas of my own and while there are girls I could draw, I just thought a buff-ass tire would look super sick in his style.
I also found out he has some speed art videos, which came in very handy to help me understand more the process, which speaking of.
The process:
I did my sketch like usual, however! there are some specific ways in which Stamen does things like hands and muscles, as I said before, there are plenty of sharp edges in his drawings, with the occasional curve here and there for dynamism, this in turn makes stuff like the fists very stylized.
Reminds me of how some cartoons would do hands making them look like this one solid main shape that would then be divided in secctions making the fingers, very neat stuff.
For the lineart it was just a pure black pen with as little as fading as possible, to make em lines pop, also, his lines are like, super frickin clean, I had to use for the first time a kind of stabilizer to compensate my parkinson pulse, and I tried to be as careful as possible with the corners to make em as clean as possible too, 0 line leftovers allowed here.
Coloring was quite a nice process, solid colors my beloved, I used white for highlights and kind of the same color but a bit darker for the shadows, I noticed how the highlights were made using some sort of airbrush, as well as darker shadows in some cases, while shadows are more like cell shading, this combination gives Stamenboy's drawings a sort of soft texture, very subtle, but I think it does wonders, specially when separating the characters from the background.
Which, Stamen has done some more complex backgrounds, but I really liked the simplicity and effectiveness of those that just featured a shape with the character on it, so that's what I went for, of course, thanks to him I just discovered how to make the character blend with the BG color like that!
The aftermath:
Well, as I said in the begging, Stamenboy's style reminded me of how I used to do certain stuff or how I still do them to this day, guess that's why I really liked it, I just can't help it but to love it when people know how to use them #000000 lines.
I think the results are kinda similar, and probably the BG is mostly the one thing that gives away who I was trying to copy, hehehe, and just maybe the hands too, a little.
