After playing the games of the Saga franchise I thought I had tried the most experimental jrpg of the 90's period, after playing Live A Live I can say that this 1994 game is the most experimental jrpg ever.
Once finished, Live a Live is in my opinion the most innovative jrpg ever, even more innovative than the games of its genre released in the following 30 years.
Certainly the possibility of choosing which story to start with, and the fact that the stories are completely different not only in setting but also in gameplay can radically change the impact that the game has on a new player, having started with the prehistory chapter I have immediately saw the more "traditional" chapter as a jrpg.
Each chapter of this game has fantastic ideas, which playing without a guide (PLAY this game withouth a guide, at least before the ending) make chapters much more fun and thanks also to their longevity, replayable. Despite the limited longevity of the chapters, the protagonists are all memorable and the humor is so 90s Japan's anime.
Live A Live is an incredible game for its time, a collage of many creative ideas, diversified gameplay united in a single project that works from start to finish, I appreciate also the lots of references to other media.
I played the recent remake, and the attention to the animations and narration in the cutscenes is excellent, the soundtrack is also beautiful, while the dubbing is amateur level.
Like practically all Squaresoft games of the 90s, Live A Live is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece, Squaresoft was a forge of talents full of ideas before the disastrous merger with Enix.
For completionists, Live A Live is a game that lasts about 30 hours, but the chapter structure of the story makes it a game that is never heavy in terms of enjoyment, I recommend this masterpiece to everyone.
