A commission like this really...isn't in my usual wheelhouse. But I do enjoy a challenge. And so when Portal asked me to take up this commission that centered around one of my favorite video game franchises of all time, I was...well I still had to be coaxed on just a little bit, but I was intrigued.
So, I did my best with my current skill level to accomplish the discussed 'grand vision' for this scene. Next week I'm getting elbow-deep in art studies, so...this was ill-timed in that regard. However, despite that it...well it turned out okay. At least Portal liked it.
This panoramic scene with Subject Delta's back to the viewer is supposed to represent the moment Johnny Topside first gazed upon Rapture. The fall of the city still a little ways off on the horizon as the city still stands largely in its prime. Has ol' Johnny stumbled upon a paradise? Or is this place a glorious glimmering facade masking the gates of hell just below the surface. Spoilers of course for Bioshock 2, but things didn't exactly go well for Johnny Topside. So the latter is the correct answer. However, this is meant to capture that moment, the first sight of Andrew Ryan's vision given form. To capture that feeling when one first plays Bioshock, and the bathysphere panel falls away to reveal the city to the player for the first time and steals your breath away.
