Platformer Concept 20

Share

I initially said I wasn't going to upload the workprints of my platformer concept art before the final versions anymore (I actually drew this months ago), but I made an exception as don't think the final versions for this one will be seen anytime soon. I'm currently trying to figure out a different method for coloring my stuff, and I don't think I'll be putting out much until I'm satisfied with what I make lol.

This is supposed to be take place in the jungle, with temples made out of gold, vines to swing on, foliage that gives you tips on where to go, and thorns to avoid. It's not much, to be honest.

Just like with Platformer Concept 19, the color/final version Platformer Concept 20 sat in the oven for months, albeit for different reasons. I actually made more progress on this piece than the former, though for chronology purposes, I made sure to complete #19 first before returning to #20.

The initial idea behind coloring this picture was to have most of the main elements outlined with colored lineart, and then filled in. I was able to carry it out...only to find the result too basic and simple to my liking. For a while I hit several dead-ends on trying to determine how to make it look less plain, before deciding to paint over the existing picture several times with the brush and airbrush tools and extensively blur the colors, namely to give it a semi-surreal quality to it (probably too surreal in retrospect. An actual level based on this would have to be toned down for player visibility). Some details of the original drawing (like the bricks and the stripes on the temple, the formations on the ground) can be spotted, if only slightly; while other details (the thorns on the now hardly-distinguishable vines on the ground, the newly-added multicolored leaves on the trees and foliage) are more conspicuous.

This is unfortunately one of the pieces that, looking back on it, I can't help but feel nothing but disdain for the way I rendered it. There's a part of me that felt this approach was a mistake back then, and it's only grown since then. For me, the color version reeks of me just throwing something together after being stuck on it for ages, and just putting it out there to be done with it. I've talked about doing remakes of my PC files, a few of which I've done. But I think this is a piece that needed it far more than the others, and I hope to actually produce a revisit of this artwork that does the original concept justice.
