A nocturne is a piece of music that represents the night. This nocturne is extremely dark, evoking both a cold, ominous night, and feelings of despair and dread. The middle section is more cheerful, with an almost hymnal feeling, representing a state of denial of ones misery. It is interrupted with brooding, dramtic arpeggios that drag it back to the darker A section. The piece is clearly inspired by Chopin and Liszt, but it also has a more modern feeling to it.
