literally me
Hello hello! It's time again for a new NGUAC submission. This one is different from the rest, but I sure had fun putting it all together!
I was super short on time with this one as I was juggling it with work and some out-of-country visitors. I've been buried in stress the last few weeks and admittedly, this track was sitting in that pile. However, this track was also my escape. It felt really good to work on something fun in the midst of so much hectic-ness going on. In the end, I spent way more time on this than what was probably responsible. I needed this escape though, and I feel excited to have been able to submit for the finals this year. The NG audio contests are a big musical highlight every year.
SO! What is this song? In short, it's about my freshmen year in high school. I just thought it would be a fun thing to write about. Life was a cycle of school, video games, sleep, repeat. On the weekends, it was all games. It was also the loneliest year of my life. Not a lot of friends outside of school. Really only one. Their company, even if online, got me through that year and is the reason I look back on it fondly despite it being so mindless and lonely.
I challenged myself to keep the lyrics lighthearted for once. I have a tendency to overdo the metaphors and wacky phrasing to the point where my music either becomes lost, incomprehensible, or sounding incredibly pretentious. There is an art to simple, lighthearted lyrics that I still have yet to master. But with this track, I have now officially given it a shot! I hope you enjoy, and I hope this track speaks to some of you with similar experiences!
LYRICS:
VERSE 1:
I haven't changed my clothes since Friday night
Bloodshot eyes, Garry's Mod burnt in my mind
Spent all night just screeching like a moron,
live and die and respawn,
talkin' to my friends online
I'm so far gone
I won't stop
What else do I got?
CHORUS:
This is how I wanna spend my weekend, baby
How I'm gonna spend my life just maybe
Think I'm gonna need a miracle to get me out
Am I ever gonna kiss a lady?
Fall in love and have a baby?
Think I'm gonna need a miracle, miracle now
VERSE 2:
I got time, I got time, I got time upon time
I got YouTube on my left screen, Twitch on my right.
Couldn't tell you what the hell I just saw
Somethin' 'bout a chainsaw
Cuttin' through a chainsaw
Damn.
My deep fried brain
Feeling it wane
With every passing day.
A hundred un-played games in the Steam library
why would I play anything but Team Fortress?
Loading up that ctf_2fort
Engineer cartel
Sentries in the intel room
I'm so far gone
I won't stop
What else do I got?
[Chorus]
VERSE 3:
Low-key
I'm lonely
Nobody
Who knows me
Gets me
Won't let me
Be happy
[Chorus]

Bro sounds like dream.
I like the cutesy, echo-y chords at the beginning and the dreamy pads that start fading in at around :14. Love the conversational tone of the vocals at :27 too. I also applaud the relatable lyrics and the production quality. The instrumental tracks could’ve used a little more variety, and the arrangement here is a little generic. The synth solo at 2:55 is awesome, though, and I also like the subtle variations on the final chorus. Overall, really solid effort here, Zane! Pleasure having you in the contest this year, and congratulations on your success in it (and NGADM too!). ^_^

Great vocal mix. I think performance could be more enthusiastic in some sections, a bit more technically wonky technique if that makes sense. Study various singers' techniques.
The lyrics of this are hilarious and onpoint. Being addicted to being online and videogames, you have painted it perfectly, how it affects your life trajectory. You're depressed and will likely never know love. Never allowed to mature! Not all gamers go through this, and you may find a lady who loves you and them, but it's rare for most, especially the basement dwelling stereotypes that made this song so relatable.
The overall mix and master is pretty clear with the exception there is a bit much sub on the bass and I think it could use emphasis on the high mids. Snare could also use to be brought out just a bit, potentially have an under snare or clap at times.
Big fan of the tempo here, really flows nicely
