Mibi - Piano Version

This is a piece from the 2nd Masada Songbook of John Zorn. The goal of the Masada project is to take Jewish music to te 21st century (like jazz has evolved from Dixieland to FreeJazz).

So, this is some Jewish - Avant-Garde!

The mucic is composed by John Zorn, but I arranged it and performed it.

It is a really explosive, energetic, "noisy", track!

Here's the plan of the piece:

-Theme x2 - Total Noise - Spaced-out sounds - Total Noise - Scratching the strings - syncopated rythms - Messiaen_like melody - Monorhythmic duo in the high-pitch - more intense and more complex arhytmics - + the basses from the theme - High-pitch freak_out - + intense basses - more violent - STOP! - Pizzicato inside the piano - Space-out sounds - Scratching harmony board + E! - Total Noise - Theme

Each section is quite easy to locate. Try to follow it is fun! So the performance is made by me on a Steinway grand piano. I used a metal pen to do the space-out sounds. I know that it is weird, but accept it for what it is : an explosive track - intense from the start to the end (however there's some quiet part.

This is not the definitive version! I'm working with a friend and we are doing it Piano + electroacoustics. It will be really clean and really really better. This is a pretaste.

I failed at the very end.. well... shit happens!

PM me if you want to hear the official versions by John Zorn (String Trio, or Jazz ensemble)

This is live?

You're an amazing piano player! I just recently took up the piano and, as you might imagine, I'm terrible. I am definitely jealous, misspent youth not withstanding.

The piece is interesting. Not the kind I could listen to all the time, as it requires all of one's attention to appreciate, but certainly a stimulating composition.

megalolord responds:

Thanks! Yes, it is live (well not in front of a public, but in front of the one that recorded it and that is doing an electro-acoustic version of the same piece). The thing about contemporary improvisation is that it's not the same skills than playing classical written music. It's more about creativity and to not be afraid of making loud noisy sounds or be percieved as ridiculous (see below for more details).

Thanks again (I really like how I arranged it (the musical evenements are well placed for contrasts))! I'm currently working on musical improvisation games (like society games) with rules and all. Maybe I'll post when I will record something (that's kinda rare)!

Is this a joke?

I'm thinking your messing about here, I love the piano as much as the next person, the piano is probably the greatest and most used sound out there but this is..... well..... shit, I'm sorry I had to say that but it just sounds like your pressing random keys it makes me kinda hate the piano in a way when I hear this, I can't think of any advice to give to improve it really, Scrap the whole idea and start from the begining. the piano can be a beautiful sound but this is not showing that at all. sorry

megalolord responds:

Well I understand your repulsion to the piece. It is weird and noisy. Maybe i've forgotten to say that it is an improvisation (not a conventional one but more on the texture and on the effects).

Some things are random and it would be mind-destructing to even think of each note that is played. However this is not the point.

It's not easy-listening, I know but there is some nice ideas and I promise that the next version that we are doing will be "better made" but still really "noisy".

I'm sorry if you don't like it (I'm making "normal" things too). Maybe you just don't like (or didn't been initiated in) noise music, avant-garde, free-jazz, contemporary classical.

PM me if you want and I will try to explain more what it is (i don't think that it's just random shit, there's intentions)!

Cheers!

Laurent
