I thought I'd show you guys a piece of what I'm working on for Robot Day.
To make the bass, I played a tone through my subwoofer and bounced stuff against the cone - cups, my fingers, etc, and recorded it with my Sony PCM-D50. I brought it into a granualizer and played around with it there, recorded the results again internally, picked out the tidbits that were good, and ran them through a ton of effects.
