one month and one broken PC audio jack later

I'm gonna be honest, this is a song I really enjoyed before I came to the Newgrounds community, partially thanks to GD. I like the original because of how energetic and memorable it is. It really is a classic both on GD and on Newgrounds, so that's why I chose it. Plus, I kinda want to hop into NACs on a good foot, so that's why when I saw paragon and nobody had made a single request yet, I went for it.

Definitely check out the original, in the case you haven't yet.

***Jan 2019 NAC Judge Review***

I always found Paragon's music boring. With that being said, I did enjoy your remix over the original.

You took what is originally a pretty dull melody and added a lot of dynamics and some cool drops. The song became more lively for me after the 2 and a half minute mark. The solo section in the middle is pretty chaotic but in a good and satisfying way. It's the best part of the song.

The drum samples are weak and I think the song could be shortened in the beginning to catch up to the more interesting sections.

A fun tune, overall.

SplatterDash responds:

Hey djt! Thanks for being a judge for this month's NAC. Before I talk about the stuff you mentioned, I will actually say that I think you're the first person who has said they don't like Paragon's music lol. I don't have anything against that; in fact, I'm actually kinda happy that there is some difference in opinion on his songs and I am more than willing to welcome that :D

I think the one thing that was an issue here was the percussion - TheComet and Flashburn also mentioned that as an issue. I think I may know a fix around this, but considering that I have Ableton 9 Lite, my samples and mastering materials are kinda limited, so it's kinda working with what I got. Still, I think I may know some solutions to this for other songs.

The intro, when I made it, was an attempt to separate from the original, which used the melody to build into the main part. I wanted to make it longer than in the song to give it leeway to expand before the actual song began. I can try looking to see how I could do the same in half the time, though, for future stuff.

Thank you again for leaving a review! I will take you advice into consideration for the future :)

Really enjoyed this take on the original, the ambience and general feel of the atmosphere you built around this is fantastic, and you definitely nailed the instrumentation to catch the vibes of the original while sitting in a different genre.

Only complaint I have is your choice of drumline sounds, they feel a little weak against the main score (granted, the original track had the same problem imo)

overall though, I dig it!

SplatterDash responds:

Hey TheComet! Thanks for coming out and being a judge for NAC :)

I honestly wish I did have some other percussion sounds to pull from, but because it's Ableton 9 Lite, everything is limited everywhere lol. I still think I know how I could improve on the sounds I have, though. Thanks for the advice on that!

SD, I am very impressed to hear someone actually recreate such a diamond, intricate track and beautifully orchestrated too and not pick a more simple track/loop that the original artist produced.

The intro builds very smoothly into the mainline almost sounding like a totally new track. The choir was a nice idea but when executed with everything else playing along side it, it simply gets pushed back, way back into background noise with no great significance or justice to the track. I would have only implemented it during more quiet parts like the bridge or intro and outro.

The meter is quite interesting as you have picked very key points to speed it up and slow it down signifying the more energetic parts and the more emotionally impacting parts with the harmony.

Your notes are spot on to the original, and the middle electric guitar sounding synth melody was a very nice changed addition to this already gorgeous tune. Very nice flow to the end of the track. The dubstep basslines sound very updated and add a little hip flavor to the track, however it also equally detracts from the track by breaking up the tempo and aural resonance of beauty that this track builds up almost muting it too much that it becomes distracting than adding new flavor.

The ending is absolutely gorgeous! The piano choice is definitely the best thing you've appended to this tune.

Overall, outstanding job, SD! 4.5/5

SplatterDash responds:

Hey, Dreamscaper! Thank you very much for taking the time to be a judge for the NAC, and I really appreciate the feedback you gave me.

The choir has honestly been my main trouble for this song, since I had sidechaining on them from the kick, which meant they had to be loud enough to be heard but not loud enough to go over the melody, carried by a piano and bells. I kinda failed in both regards, since the melody didn't want to come out (hence I added the guitar at 1:09) and the choir was still too soft. Hopefully I can play around with it if I do something like this again.

The bassline for the dubstep portions was also a little troubling, because it didn't want to come out when nothing else was playing and the main focus was on it. I probably should have went all in on it and then went back to the melody, though, since it does, as I listen to it again, break up the stuff that's going on just to be there and open, but also not there.

Mixing is my weaker spot, so I can probably play around with different things to bring out stuff at the right time and volume. Still, though, I feel like I could definitely learn a lot from your critique. Thank you for both reviewing and, again, being a judge of NAC :D

I actually love your composition here. I do feel the drums could be a bit heavier in parts though, and the mix feels pretty muddled in most of the louder parts of the track.

SplatterDash responds:

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, mixing is my weak spot in my songs, and I think I may have something I want to try out to see if it provides a solution, but I will definitely take your advice into consideration as I work with it :)

Very well done, good work on making a remix without taking anything away from the original.
