HO HO HOPE you become a Newgrounds Supporter this year!
We're working hard to give you the best site possible, but we have bills to pay and community support is vital to keep things going and growing. Thank you for considering!
Trying out some 80's synth sound design. Needs work.
Any retrowave nerds out there have any tips?
Love it
I like the dreamy quality and cheesy synths. The progression is a little slow-paced at times, and the chord structure is a little bland. I think you overdid the reverb on the percussion, especially during the fills at 1:54. The melodies at 2:03 are nice, but the bass and drums get a little drowned out at that section. The smooth flow and atmosphere really help sell this piece, and the seductive saxophone is a highlight for sure. Some of the harmonic details might need more fleshing out, but this is a solid start. I'm far from being a "retrowave nerd," but I'm looking forward to hearing more of your experiments with '80s synths. ^_^
thanks! Yeah, when I think big 80's drums I imagine cavernous reverb but I think I overdid it. They're a bit boomy. I think I need to book up on actual 80's production methods to capture that feel.
Like larrynachos said, layering would really help the lead. Personally, I would suggest layering it with a supersaw stab. If you have FL Studio, FL Flex has some great synthwave sounds to use or maybe base it off of.
Really chill track! Relaxing listen :) The only gripe I have is the main lead doesn't sound very "full"; I personally would have tried layering a bell synth/sample with some more mid frequencies like the one at 2.36. Doesn't take away from the excellence that is this track! Loved the sax bit at 3.12 :)
I am no retrowave nerd, but honestly I like it. Keep up the awesome. :)
Please contact me if you would like to use this in a project. We can discuss the details.
