Since I didn't find any "official" or otherwise main thread relating to the PlayStation Vita, I'd thought I'd make one. If there happens to be one, pardon my lack of search bar skills.

The PlayStation Vita!

It's Sony's new handheld platform after the PSP, it went by the codename "Next Generation Portable", or NGP. After a few showings, the handheld was renamed the Vita, Latin for "life", and is now on the way.

Anywho, the system boasts a capacitive touch screen on the front with a touch screen on the back, too. It also features dual thumbsticks and connectivity features with the PS3 via Remote Play. You can use the Vita as the controller for a PS3 and play it on the handheld, similar to the Wii U's tablet controller. It's also region-free for those import-crazy gamers.

Sadly the PS Vita isn't backwards compatible with UMD games on the PSP; however, downloaded PSP games can be transferred to the console. Sony is considering offering a program where you can download PSP titles if you own them on UMD. The system'll also use a different kind of memory card exclusive to the Vita, if it weren't difficult enough.

There'll be two versions of the system: a regular wi-fi only version costing $250 U.S. (250 euro or 24,980 yen) and a 3G-compatible version with AT&T for $300 U.S. (300 euro or 29,980 yen).

The system launches in Japan this December and in North America & Europe in February.

Launch dates:
Japan: December 17, 2011
North America & Europe: February 22, 2012 (it's legit)

Sources & Links:
Launch Titles (for Japan anyway)
Complete list of announced and/or developing games
General info about the Vita
Pricing listed from E3 2011
News of region-free

Bumped because it would be a shame for this thread to not even get two pages.

I am not a fan of the button overload. Touch screen on the back and front, plus the buttons? AND motion controls? And two analog sticks? Do we really need all of those buttons? NO touch screen on the back! It should not have a touch screen on the back.

I'm just a dreamer.

Thanks for the bump, I'm behind with updating the thread myself. Sorry.

At any rate, some grim news. Y'know those memory cards that are exclusive for the Vita I mentioned in the OP? They're required. I know memory cards are needed to save, but it looks like some games won't even boot without one.

The good news is that Vita bundles will be sold a week earlier than the system's launch date in the Americas. The bundle, according to this article, "will include the PS Vita 3G / Wi-Fi SKU, 4GB Memory Card, limited edition case, a copy of Little Deviants, and will ship one week earlier than the stand-alone PS Vita SKU at $349.99."

If you're curious about Little Deviants, here's a video.

Who the fuck needs two touch screens!
One is plenty seeing as it can (Technically) fit as many buttons and there are pixels.
The two joysticks is fine.
But what is up with the absolute homo new memory cards that cost a fortune.
WHAT WAS WRONG WITH THE OTHERS!?!
They worked fine and they were cheap, but Sony said FUCK DAT! and made 4x as expensive.
Bullshit.
Plus the only games they are getting are games you could get on console so not worth it, I will just get a 3ds if I wanted a handheld.

I Hereby post the blame on You

Getting it day one on the actual launch, screw that "First Edition" garbage.

Here's a image I made immediately upon seeing that stupid email Sony sent out. I plan to buy all the games I called "ports" and realise some of them are completely new games. Also getting Uncharted and whatever that other new game was called that I forgot the name of, irony at its best.

The image was meant to be funny (read: hilarious) and hopefully no one gets buttpained over it. Lighten up and get a great (read: amazing) sense of humor like me.

I knew I'd be getting this shit day one (the real launch, not that shitty 1st edition deal) before they even announced any games. I still think the PSP is a great system, mostly because I love Final Fantasy and most of the series is on it and from the looks of things this is better in literally every way. Even the shitty launch titles look great. It also comes out near my birthday. Fucking HYPED.

In that case, I'll keep the PSVita in mind. I don't have much to say about the launch titles but I'm hoping there'll be a few I'd consider. If I buy some PSP games that I want and have a download for them on the Vita, that's two birds hit with one stone. Still, I'd prefer if they could just have all the PSP titles for download on the PS store.

I loved the PSP for what it was, but I eventually got rid of mine because I needed some cash pretty bad at the time.

I'd love to get the Vita and check it out, it's a shame we can't rent new consoles, because I won't know anybody personally who owns this. I may just pitch 50-50 with my little brother, that way we will share it entirely and I'm safe as far as wasting cash goes, if it's good enough I'll buy the other half off of him lol.

ARE YOU SHITTING ME!?

Sony is selling a 4GB memory card for $30, and a 32GB one for $145!?

WTF Sony? You're pulling a Micro$oft! You know what, scratch that, Micro$oft has never done something so assholish! The least you could fucking do is include the 4GB version with the new hardware.

FUCK!

Same here.
As of right now, I'd only be buying it for LittleBigPlanet PSV. And I don't think that one game would be worth $400.

Fuck you give me money!

Bumpage for news. Looks like you can transfer UMD games to the Vita... for a price, via the UMD Passport.

Sony lets you register UMD games on your PSN account and you can re-download them for a price ranging from $7 to $13 a piece. The downloaded UMD games will "include a digital manual, bilinear filtering, and control options that make use of the right analog stick."

Response to Official Ps Vita Thread Nov 28, 2011

Bumpan'. Y'know those exclusive memory cards? They've been priced for North America.

Here's the prices for the memory cards:
4GB: $29.99
8GB: $44.99
16GB: $69.99
32GB: $119.99

Holy crap.

Response to Official Ps Vita Thread Nov 28, 2011

So basically, entry cost is $100 more than the 3DS.

If the games are good, it will be worth it.

Response to Official Ps Vita Thread Nov 30, 2011

More bumpage, and for once some good news. The Vita won't have fixed prices; instead, games can be priced in tiers, similar to how the iPhone's or Android's app centers are with ranging prices. Here's a linky link for ya.

Personally I find the concept of tiered prices a good idea, and one that should've been called sooner in an industry where every new game is $60 a pop. But with stuff like DLC, this could be a good or bad thing.

$29.99 for a 4GB memory card? What the fuck, Sony?

If you compare them to danish prices, then that would be considered somewhat cheap. Although the danish prices are probably going to be a lot worse then american prices.

I forgot the title to one of it's games. It's a platform/puzzle game where you play as two rubber suits where you blow them up like a balloon, or squish them so they can float or squeeze through tight spaces. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

We don't need a memorystick to save a game do we? If so I'm getting a cash refund from gamestop. They never told me this, I wouldn't have preordered this pos handheld if I knew I was getting scammed. You shouldn't need a memory stick to save a game. Neither the playstation 3 or original psp work like that(since the original psp has internal memory for games).

No, they're for downloadable games. Vita games ship on their own memory cards that have a set amount of space set aside for save files and patches.

Thanks for that, I had my dad worried. He was getting upset... And yes, I'm a man-child at the age of 25. I haven't grown up yet... I don't know whats wrong with me, but I'm a kid at heart still.

Not really sure about saves, but these cards are reported to be necessary for the games to even boot. I know that the new Uncharted requires a card just to start, so yeah. Not sure about the other titles.

Turns out you're wrong. You do need a memory stick, and I have to get their shitty ass memory stick. I'm so mad right now, I feel like killing the owner of sony for being a jerk.

http://playstationlifestyle.net/2011/12/

If you plan on buying a PlayStation Vita, you will have to buy a memory stick just to play all the retail games, so the true cost of the Vita is above the advertised price of $249. Sony has basically sold a car without one of the wheels, just to make it appear cheaper.

Are you put off by the expensive, yet necessary, memory cards? Let us know in the comments below.

Will Playstation Vita get Batman Arkham Asylum and Arkham City on it?

It would be cool if they could port those games to the Vita. I'm not sure how powerful the Vita is but I think they could port one or both of those games down to the Vita. Of course I'm not expecting the exact graphics from its ps3/360 counterparts but good enough to be impressed by it on a handheld.

At 12/6/11 10:54 AM, TheKlown wrote: Will Playstation Vita get Batman Arkham Asylum and Arkham City on it?

I don't think so. The only other console that Arkham City's being developed on is the Wii U, and that's still a long ways off. I doubt they'd re-release Arkham Asylum, but who knows in an industry filled with HD and portable remakes.

From what I found about the Vita is that it can be used as a controller/screen with the PS3, as we've seen with the Wii U. I think (read: guess) that the PSP has done the same thing, but I don't have a PS3 so I don't know. Now whether or not all PS3 games are automatically compatible with the Vita is beyond me. So in the best case scenario, yes you can play the Batman games on the Vita, as long as you're in range of the PS3.
