Since I didn't find any "official" or otherwise main thread relating to the PlayStation Vita, I'd thought I'd make one. If there happens to be one, pardon my lack of search bar skills.
The PlayStation Vita!
It's Sony's new handheld platform after the PSP, it went by the codename "Next Generation Portable", or NGP. After a few showings, the handheld was renamed the Vita, Latin for "life", and is now on the way.
Anywho, the system boasts a capacitive touch screen on the front with a touch screen on the back, too. It also features dual thumbsticks and connectivity features with the PS3 via Remote Play. You can use the Vita as the controller for a PS3 and play it on the handheld, similar to the Wii U's tablet controller. It's also region-free for those import-crazy gamers.
Sadly the PS Vita isn't backwards compatible with UMD games on the PSP; however, downloaded PSP games can be transferred to the console. Sony is considering offering a program where you can download PSP titles if you own them on UMD. The system'll also use a different kind of memory card exclusive to the Vita, if it weren't difficult enough.
There'll be two versions of the system: a regular wi-fi only version costing $250 U.S. (250 euro or 24,980 yen) and a 3G-compatible version with AT&T for $300 U.S. (300 euro or 29,980 yen).
The system launches in Japan this December and in North America & Europe in February.
Launch dates:
Japan: December 17, 2011
North America & Europe: February 22, 2012 (it's legit)
