NG & OpenAI Partnership

We're excited to announce that Newgrounds has partnered with OpenAI, a non-profit artificial intelligence research company that aims to carefully promote and develop friendly AI in such a way as to benefit, rather than harm, humanity as a whole. Elon Musk (Tesla, SpaceX, Hyperloop) is one of the founders.

This partnership involves Universe, a software platform for measuring and training an AI's general intelligence across the world's supply of games, websites and other applications.

When you publish a game on Newgrounds, you now have the option to include it in the Universe research project, where an AI will attempt to learn and play your game while documenting the results. Look for the checkbox at the bottom of your project details form (screenshot below), with information and terms of participation. Once your game passes judgment on NG, it will be pushed to Universe.

You can also submit your existing games to this project, which we hope many developers will do. Simply click the red pencil icon on the top right of your game page to access the project details, then read and agree to the OpenAI terms. You will need to then click the publish button and complete the publish process for your game to be submitted.

The results of your game being played by the AI will be publicly available - we'll be looking into tying that data back to your game project on NG, so it's easy to find.

We hope this will be a fun experiment for game developers, while progressing AI in a way that is open and beneficial to all!

Whoa, that sounds AWESOME!

Is there any chance the AI will get its own user account? I would like to see its medals and stuff like that in the future.

I've always wondered whether Second Wind could be played in a way that you ALWAYS win with any class (even the harder ones like Blackguard) consistently, every time. I think the true test of a good roguelike is when the rng doesn't get in the way of the player.

That's a darn good question, I'm gonna ask about that. As far as I know it plays the games off-site so that won't be an option, but maybe it could be.

@tomfulp Cool! Now does this work with flash games? Or is it more like a html/Unity game type thing?

Primary focus is Flash games although expecting HTML5 games to work as well.

Nice! It'd be great to see some notoriously difficult games get added. I want to see a computer perfect Lastman.

Oh, this is absolutely awesome!
I'll try to do this for one or two of my games, if possible!
Cool stuff.

Well, does it matter what type of game? I don't think submitting art games or interactive fiction would be of much help, would it?

If only they had a usecase for developing an Artificial Retardation system their bot could just scrape the BBS.

Joking aside, pretty cool that NG is helping to advance science!

Crazy! I was just reading up on OpenAI earlier this morning!

When you say "The results of your game being played by the AI will be publicly available" does that mean there will be a video showing the computer play, learn and adapt to the game? Or will it just be a document of scores, times and things like that?

I would LOVE to see a video of a computer attempting to learn a game. It would be especially fun when a game is procedurally generated, because then it would have to learn general "rules" rather than some one specific combination of timed actions.

I've actually hesitated to add that since it also has the build a Raybot mode which could result in a billion raybots being built, although that would require being logged in which the AI currently won't be... So maybe would be totally fine and it would figure out to fight the Raybots.

Was waiting for someone to bring that up... We're excluding adult rated content, as hilarious as that would be to see.

In a perfect future, the existing NG bots will partake in the singularity some day. Then they can do my job after I'm dead.

Not 100% sure about just how much data will be recorded and accessible.
