What dose that even mean!? I try looking it up but nothing works.

Either the file is corrupt or not named properly. You could try downloading it again. Just make sure it ends with .fla

It's almost always because they exported with a version of flash higher than yours.

Each Flash version can only save 1 version back, so if you want to open an Animate CC file in Flash 8, then you have to open in Animate, save as CS6, open in CS6, save as CS5... all the way down.

Just checked the file from the link.

It opens in Flash 8 just fine.

MX is an older version of Flash than Flash 8. The version names are confusing so you can look up all the versions online.

For you to open the file in MX, I opened it in Flash 8 and saved it down to MX format for you: https://www.dropbox.com/s/pvs7fr1j5ob31ox/Avenger_Sheet_MX.fla?dl=0

you could also download a Flash 8 trial and activate it (it's abandonware so any valid key can be used infinite times). Flash 8 is more common, crashes less, the brush is better, and the blur/glow is better/easier.

And just to add to that, you can install Flanimate Power Tools on Flash 8 which will make it incredibly more powerful than MX or vanilla Flash 8.

Haven't tried the tools since I try to minimize my dependence on puppet animation, though they look neat. Are you the one developing them?

edit: nvm I found your bio on the site

The best extension I use for any old Flash version is Autosave. It's compatible with both MX and Flash 8

To install it:

  • Close Flash
  • Open Macromedia Extension Manager (which comes with Flash)
  • Click "Install New Extension" and open the MXP file (Click Here to download). Follow installation instructions.
  • Re-open Flash. The toolbar will be available under Window > Other Panels

Yes, we're the only ones who still actively develop extensions for Flash/Animate and we support all versions from Flash 8 onward.

The rigging/puppet tools are only a part of the package. There are others, that you might find useful also, like Smart Graphic Control - a better version of the defunct Caddy, Frames to Movieclips to easily use filters, Timeline Block to Symbol to nest a bunch of frames into a container and more.

Converted it to MX: https://www.dropbox.com/s/9vnhlwekaybdx5n/MC9%20Sprite%20Sheet%20MX.fla?dl=0

As for the other stuff you said... I guess that's par for the course for NG.

I took a look and will keep them in mind, for myself and others since everyone has wildly different workflows. The SGC and Kineflex bone tool look really good, so I'll def recommend those to people who are into puppet anim (since I don't recommend Adobe's bone tool).

Thanks, mate!

Yeah, bone tool is a disgrace and recently introduced Layer Parenting in Animate is only half-baked.

Haha, well put. I used bone tool as a joke at the end of one of my anims to make a guy flail. I tried my best to make it look kinda passable, but even people who didn't use the bone tool recognized it immediately.

I looked at the official Layer Parenting tutorial, I can't immediately see what's wrong with it (other than being super limiting). I like how in the tutorial they used classic tweens; not even Adobe devs like the new tweens.

Meanwhile Adobe was hinting at removing classic tweens 3 yrs ago. Glad they weren't THAT dumb.

Enjoyed your reel, mate! Wild stuff!

Yeah, the problems with Layer Parenting are not as obvious at first glance (apart from some bugs), but once you attempt to use them for actual work you run into dead ends all the time - things that break the workflow and there are no fast and elegant ways to avoid. For example, there is no way to temporarily un-parent so that you can make small adjustments or to do an inverse transformation, and many more like that.

The only real benefit is that Classic Tweens go along arcs.
