So is it "safe" to post art/sketches related to future projects here? Does the CC license help?
My biggest fear is that someone will see my ideas and do something similar to mine but before me.
If I'd gotten over my fears of posting art a few years ago, I might be better known by now. Oh well, at least I'm starting!
Newgrounds is full of creative people; this is the whole reason that the site exists. That's not to say there's nobody on the site who would steal -- it's a big site, and not everybody is a content producer. But anybody who does make content likely appreciates the work and struggle that goes into any piece. Creative people have lots of empathy, and do not like it when their art gets ripped off, which means they get very protective if they learn that one of their own -- especially a new artist -- has had their artwork stolen.
Unfortunately, if you post anything on the internet, there will always be a risk that somebody tries to rip it off. But it's a small risk. Because if you're part of the art community, you quickly learn: Why would anyone steal? How could anyone be aware of the internet fury that would be unleashed on them, and still think that it's a wise idea to steal credit or profit from you, the artist?
Of course, art thieves don't know or care about this, or they wouldn't exist. But they can't hide from artists and their supporters. If you watermark your stuff, keep project files on hand, and engage with the community so people know who you are and build up an identity of you, it won't be easy for a would-be thief to pass off your art as their own. They'd get walloped, and they would deserve it.
