Is it "safe" to post art on NewGrounds?

Recently I've being doing concepts of characters for a comic that I am planning, and I want to post them here, but I'm too afraid of theft! So until now I've just posted art/sketches that I don't care too much about.

So is it "safe" to post art/sketches related to future projects here? Does the CC license help?

My biggest fear is that someone will see my ideas and do something similar to mine but before me.

It’s not safe to post your art publicly anywhere, that’s the risk you’re making in order to share it.

If you’re concerned, aim to make pics you share easier to trace back to you. Try watermarks - not obnoxiously large ones, but enough to cover a portion of your ideas that can’t be edited out easily, like a leg. Also provide sigs in places that can’t just be brushed or cropped out.

Same with the other post, When you put something on the internet, it is unavoidable that someone could see something you made and take something from it and apply it to your own work. If you're worried about someone stealing your character designs, reverse image search your own artwork that you've posted, and see if it appears on some account you didn't create.

EDIT: It really isn't something to worry about, however. I wouldn't stress yourself over it. Post what you want and have fun with it. Newgrounds is a place where artists can create what they want, discuss it, and share it with others. :)

Creative Commons licenses are actually meant for people who want to share their work to allow others to use it, so in your case I recommend not using one.

Does unchecking CC when posting puts the piece on another license? that wasn't very clear in the wiki.

If you uncheck the box the piece won't use any CC license and it will say "You may not use this work for any purposes". This is what you want to do if you don't want anyone using your work and want to retain your Copyright.

By default, an artist already has Copyright to their own creations. (At least this is how it is in the US.) Only use license if you want someone to use your art. If it's not clear - CC licenses are basically only for like if you want to give blanket permission for people to use something you made without giving up your full Copyright. A typical use case would be: you post an image, you allow others to use it, but they have to attribute (credit) you.

I don't think anyone would be able to get away with stealing your work. As long as you have proof you came up with the idea first, it's obvious the person that stole that idea is going to get enormous backlash, especially if it is an established creator. Look at how people are treating Butch Hartman for tracing a picture of Ranma.

If I'd gotten over my fears of posting art a few years ago, I might be better known by now. Oh well, at least I'm starting!

Newgrounds is full of creative people; this is the whole reason that the site exists. That's not to say there's nobody on the site who would steal -- it's a big site, and not everybody is a content producer. But anybody who does make content likely appreciates the work and struggle that goes into any piece. Creative people have lots of empathy, and do not like it when their art gets ripped off, which means they get very protective if they learn that one of their own -- especially a new artist -- has had their artwork stolen.

Unfortunately, if you post anything on the internet, there will always be a risk that somebody tries to rip it off. But it's a small risk. Because if you're part of the art community, you quickly learn: Why would anyone steal? How could anyone be aware of the internet fury that would be unleashed on them, and still think that it's a wise idea to steal credit or profit from you, the artist?

Of course, art thieves don't know or care about this, or they wouldn't exist. But they can't hide from artists and their supporters. If you watermark your stuff, keep project files on hand, and engage with the community so people know who you are and build up an identity of you, it won't be easy for a would-be thief to pass off your art as their own. They'd get walloped, and they would deserve it.

I remember one of my works on DeviantArt being used in some blog about how masturbating is bad, in the most ironic display of bigotry I could have ever imagined

It was so blatantly ignorant that I left them alone, merely awed at their immense dim-wittedness

What you want is some good ol fashioned metadata. That's how they caught the burger king foot lettuce guy.

"Oh you didn't steal this? Well then why does it say I made it when I open the file in notepad."

That had to be awkward, and they are lucky that you are so nice. I would have made a fuss about them using my artwork without permission just because I wanted to mess with them.

Well, the thing is, the artwork was named "Choking the chicken"

And it was a character choking a literal rubber chicken while winking.

And I don't know if you can tell, but I'm probably the least anti-fapping person you could find
