AIM 2021 Fan Voting Thread

Welcome to the AIM 2021 fan vote thread! Here, you will cast your votes for your favourite entries! Please read this post carefully before voting, as the process will be different from the most recent AIMs.

(Please direct any questions about the fan vote itself to the AIM 2021 Discussions thread.)

Voting

Instead of picking just one entry, you will now be ranking your top 5 entries. You will post them numerically from 1 to 5, 1 being the entry you like the most. Format the votes like this:

#1

Link to #1 Audio

#2

Link to #2 Audio

#3

Link to #3 Audio

#4

Link to #4 Audio

#5

Link to #5 Audio

For the above example, please use the Share link on the track you’d like to vote for and put it on its own line so that it embeds into the post. Links should look something like this: https://www.newgrounds.com/audio/listen/1044823 on their own line, without any of the ?updated=23423 stuff after it.

Alternatively, you can put your votes in a numbered list as such:

  1. “Title of Track 1” by Author 1
  2. “Title of Track 2” by Author 2
  3. “Title of Track 3” by Author 3
  4. “Title of Track 4” by Author 4
  5. “Title of Track 5” by Author 5

Linking to the tracks themselves is appreciated, but not necessary, so long as the title and the author names are accurate.

If you want to provide commentary on your votes, you can do so below your votes in the same post (though comments aren’t necessary). The important thing is keeping the votes separate so that it’s easier to keep track of them.

Scoring System

The ranked pieces will be assigned a certain number of points:

  • 1st place vote - 5 points
  • 2nd place vote - 4 points
  • 3rd place vote - 3 points
  • 4th place vote - 2 points
  • 5th place vote - 1 point

The Fan Favourite award will be given to the entry with the most points that is not already going to be a winner or runner-up. If a winner is indeterminate by too few people voting and not enough overlap, this award may be abandoned altogether.

Rules/Guidelines

  • Both participants and non-participants can vote. The only people on Newgrounds who cannot vote are the judges (for obvious reasons).
  • You can only vote on qualifying entries submitted in AIM 2021. These can be found in the AIM 2021 masterlist or the approved entries playlists (1, 2, 3)
  • Voting for the same entry more than once (eg. ranking one entry you like as both 1st and 2nd) is not allowed. You can, however, vote for different entries by the same composer (for those who submitted 2 entries).
  • If you don’t want to rank 5 entries, you can also do a top 3. Those three will be given the same amount of points as the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place votes in a top 5 (5, 4 and 3 points respectively). You must vote for a minimum of 3 entries - you can also rank 4 entries if you’d like, but I would encourage everyone voting to rank 5 entries. There’s over 100 entries, so there’s plenty of content to consider.
  • Voting for your own entry is permitted but heavily frowned upon.
  • Keep all your votes in one post; don’t split your votes among multiple posts.

If you must change your votes, state you are changing them at the beginning of a new post, then post your full list of votes again directly below your statement using one of the formats above in that same post. I don’t need to know which votes specifically have changed, just that you’ve changed your votes and what the latest revision of your votes is. Avoid doing this more than once if possible, as too many changes will make counting the votes confusing.

--------

The fan vote will end shortly after the judges have finished deliberating. There will be a 24 hour warning before the fan vote closes and then the results will be released. This will not be happening for at least 3-4 weeks, so please take your time and don’t rush. Happy listening!

There were so many incredible entries!. My five votes go towards the tracks which, out of my favourites, best connected with their chosen source material.

Don't forget to get your fan votes in, the organisers and artists have put thousands of hours work into this!

Giving this a bump

Here I go. I listened to all pieces while taking a gander at the art. I gave all of them a preliminary listen, gathered the best ones into a round 2, and an optional round 3 for the cream of the crop (which never ended up happening). At first I considered weighing in how well they encapsulate the art, but then there's the whole aspect of music adding to the art instead of just replicating it. In the end I dropped that whole angle and voted for the pieces I enjoyed listening to the most.

My text document after the preliminary round had a long list of entries, but in the end, the standouts ended up ranking themselves neatly into the top 5.

There were a lot of great songs in this contest, it was hard to narrow it down to 5 but also fun. I tried to focus on how interesting I found the composition and how well the track fit with the art. I gave a lot of attention to tracks that either took a lot of unexpected turns or to tracks that made me feel strong emotions. I think I had a bias for songs that sounded jazzy or emo. Hopefully that can inform the reasoning behind most of my picks.

I certainly don't envy the judges of this contest ;) There were a lot of impressive entries! For my top 5, I made a list of my favourite entries that stood out for me, which were about 20. These were tracks that had above average production quality, that I enjoyed listening to and that I felt had some connection to the image. It was quite difficult for me to narrow this list down to a top 5, but here we go:

Comments:

#1: This one pulled me into the artwork from the first second. The composition is impressive, developing a simple theme over 3 minutes using the entire orchestra and enhancing the connection to the artwork in the process. The production quality is okay. There are tracks that sound better, but I didn't want to factor this in too much, because the mix is consistent (nothing suddenly jumps out sounding extremely different to everything else) and because pro quality orchestral libraries often cost a lot of money.

#2: I also feel a really strong connection to the artwork here - dark and a little disturbing. Once the percussion kicks in this just blows me away.

#3: A really well produced pop song that is a joy to listen to. The vocals also work really well. Two reasons why this isn't my #1 or #2: While it fits the artwork, I feel like a lot of other summer-vibes pop songs would fit almost as well. Also, the second half of the song is not much more than a repetition of the first one.

#4: Great composition and production that also fits the artwork very well. There is a part after the beginning that sounds too chaotic to me, otherwise this could easily be higher in my top 5.

#5: To me, this is simply an awesome and exciting track to listen to. Great composition and production. I didn't rank this higher because while the artwork fits, I don't really hear the influence of the artwork in the track that much.

107 entries is soooo many songs

After listening and re-listening to the ones I liked the most there were still a lot to choose from

So I decided to think less and just feel more

Here are my picks for the top 5 fan vote

I really liked these ones (and 50+ other ones), it was either a combination of catchy tunes, nostalgia, genre preference, a bunch of biases honestly, that made me pick these 5

And I don't feel like elaborating any further

Peace out!

Woah, it took some time to narrow things down into a pretty short list! With much listening, I finally managed to get some of my favorites lined up here.

I finally listened to all the songs in detail, whew what a challenge! Picking just the best few was quite difficult, I have a newfound respect for the judges. When deciding I took into consideration the corresponding art, as I found it really made the difference for a few songs.

#1 wow

#2 such a hard decision if this should take the top spot or not

#3 yes

#4 fits image so perfectly

#5 woah, second few listens blew me away

My entire shortlist of entries is here, since 5 spaces isn't quite enough to show all the people who made something awesome. I know it won't have much affect on the results, but let us give a top 10 for fan voting next aim T-T
