Via Summer Jams organizer @BrandyBuizel:
Summer Animation Jams ROUND 5 Winners!
Presenting the winners of the Epic Trailer Jam and the Top 10 Winners Overall below!
We’ve received 53 submissions in the final round; some teasers, some trailers, and more prospective video game ideas than anticipated. If you liked any of the submissions then I encourage you to go back and write a review that just might make the creator turn their idea into a reality. Make that movie, make that comic, make that game!
Our judges panel was made up of the handsomest men and the most talented pens as well as the winners of the 2018 Summer Jams @BrandyBuizel @karlsia @BadTwinZ @RicePirate @Krinkels @DOMROMART and @MalcolmSith. These trailers tease and titillate our senses as well as deliver concepts we’d love to see become real, although some are just plain hysterical all on their own.
15th Place - 1pt
@ViewtifulValentine delivers a teaser for their comic with great art and interesting character designs, but why the police lineup? Why all the old people? A line of text or some brief narration is a great way to add the right amount of context.
14th Place - 2pts
@TheExtreamH’s entry takes itself very seriously(partially because this is a series they do intend to make) and has the perfect audio to set the tone. They’ve got explosions, jagged smear frames and a classic anime origin story in under 90 seconds.
13th Place - 3pts
At the time of judging @devoidgazer’s submission was incomplete which just goes to show how promising the first 30 seconds were upon viewing and how much higher they could fly. I’d watch a whole movie of this cute little robot just enjoying the simple pleasures in life.
12th Place - 4pts
@ambre-e poses an amazing question in the first 3 seconds. The following 50 seconds contain interesting visuals that almost make up for the fact that most of the information about the prospective webtoon is contained in the submission description instead of the trailer. We judge the entries as they are and a lot of these submissions would’ve gripped us more with the proper information being shown inside of the trailer. Be confident!
11th Place - 5pts
@tomonaku has irrefutable command over the punk-rock aesthetic, but all I can tell from the trailer is that I think they’re a band, maybe graffiti artists. Is it a slice of life comedy? What’s the giant “22” on the building mean? It feels more like a show intro. All I can say is we’d love to see more of these characters in whatever it is they’re for.
10th Place - 6pts
THE PERC RAGE by @8bitmarbles does not take itself too seriously and comes out ahead with some excellent voice work that is just our kind of shit. The audio kills and the 3D clay stylings put this drug-fueled nightmare at the top of our 2022 watch list. Cannot wait for the full theater experience!
9th Place - 7pts
@test-object is a genius who possibly dug up the grave of Dave McKean’s still-breathing body for their incredible talent and sick visuals. You’ve brought us to the edge of our seats once again, curious about the trials Pope Ramses might face and how Anubis factors into all of it.
8th Place - 8pts
@arandomintern you should MAKE THIS. The audio is a little loud and the thumbnail is misleading as to how awesome this idea is, but if you wanna rock your soul past the gates of hell, standing above a racecar, barreling towards the finish line at 145mph… I just had a heart attack.
7th Place - 9pts
@midgetsausage laid down a crazy amount of detail into this fake game(that should get made) and some very fun design concepts reminiscent of A Hat in Time and Paper Mario. The sound design is punchy; we especially enjoyed the orchestral mini-game with inverted sound effects.
6th Place - 10pts
@BingoWaders made us question if it would be easier to just make a real game and film it or fake it. Doesn’t matter, we’d download the crap out of Coxackers Shakedown on itch.io if it were made real. Well-timed humor and groovy use of mixed-media.
5th Place - 11pts
@saustychan teams up with @milkypossum and a beautiful voiceover artist to pitch a DS game that already feels like a complete package straight from the Nintendo Direct. All facets of this trailer come together perfectly and in such a professional presentation. Why are we cursed to see these fake games we’ll never play!
4th Place - 12pts
@Higzl has dramatic storytelling and comedic timing down to a science. So many wallpaper worthy styleframes. This right here is how you making a ****ing trailer! I won’t spoil this one for you, please watch it, their content is underrated as hell.
3rd Place - 13pts
@lucascoolsouza knows how to set a creepy mood, even with just 8-bit game art. Making trailers isn’t as simple as tossing some shots together and slapping on a music track, it’s an art form of suspense that captures your attention all the way through till the moment it ends and you’re left asking: “Okay, when can I play?”
2nd Place - 14pts
@Stradomyre has proven themselves time and time again these last few rounds. It’s too damn good looking, but it’s not all glitter-glue and stickers, the concept is fun and the character designs show a lot of love for their craft. I’m not sure what the stakes are, but I can’t deny that I’d like to see where this show goes.
1st Place - 15pts
@BuhlBoy is the big winner of ROUND 5. They’re funny as shit, go drop a follow. Not only that but the concept is fun, the trailer leaks a few of the potential hijinks, and the jabs at gamers are so self-loathing and self-aware that we can’t help but say we’d unironically watch the full thing in theaters. You’ve convinced us, kudos.
Overall winners in the next post below along with commemorative shirts!
