Good microphone recommendations? 2022-02-09 00:26:58

Hey fellas.

I'm looking for a good microphone but here are the specifics I need:

  • needs a stand
  • USB not Aux
  • $150 prince range (can be higher)

All I need, is a microphone that's better than this Blue Snowball I own.

If you have any suggestions/recommendations, lemme know! You'll be really helping a creator out! :)

I use a Røde NT1-A myself, XLR connection, but I think it comes in USB as well. I hear a lot of good things about - and material recorded with - the Audio Technica AT2020, which definitely comes in USB.

Don't forget including a pop screen and some type of sound proofing on your shopping list; these will likely do more for the quality of your sound than a mic upgrade, assuming you already have a decent one.

I've heard good things of the AT2020, which is much closer to your budget, but I haven't used it.

I have the NT1-A as well, the XLR goes to a (separately bought) Focusrite Scarlett-Solo audio interface which connects by USB. It's definitely the more expensive option of the above, but if you can get both bits on sale the price comes down significantly.

Pop screen and sound proofing eh? Interesting, I don't have those but I'll have to look into that.

Thanks for the mic reccomendations too! :)

I haven't tried it myself, but in theory you can make a pop screen from a piece of pantyhose stretched over a simple frame (like a PVC ring). Coincidentally, watching this right now - and the dude says the exact same thing as I'm typing it :D

For the proofing I use an Auralex Mudguard myself, but you can also set up a makeshift tent or wall of blankets - anything that prevents reflections from going into the mic.

I can't exactly in good conscience reccomend many USB microphones, but that's because I'm a bit anal when it comes to microphone quality. If you ever plan to get an XLR in the future, then I would just say don't waste the time investing in a high end USB, because with a $150 price range you're looking at the best USB choices, really.

If you absolutely need one (i.e. you have a project that requires a bit more quality coming up) then my first microphone was a hand me down Samson G Track Pro. It has some very nice low-end, and realllyyy useful QOL features for just doing stuff at your desk.

The AT 2020 USB is also a classic beginner choice for a reason. It's decent, flat response, a little brightness to add some 'artificial energy' is what I say.

But with 150 dollars - or even waiting for 50 more dollars to come your way - you can set yourself up with a very decent cheap XLR setup, with a Berringer interface and a cheaper XLR mic that I see hundreds of podcast and stream youtubers recommending.

I always suggest doing your own research. You learn a tonnn just browsing around stuff and seeing what the response looks like on these microphones.

Hope this helped! Cheers.
