Ramshackle is hosting a Kickstarter to produce an animated pilot! They are halfway there and could use your help, watch the original Ramshackle thesis film and consider supporting the pilot!

Thursday Update

We finally added a Comic category! When we first made the Art Portal, we thought tags would be enough for comics. That was a mistake! We're planning to bulk-convert anything categorized as "Other" with a "comic" tag, anything tagged "webcomic" or "comic-strip", then manually going through the rest, which includes a lot of comic book fan art and stuff that won't switch over. You're welcome to update your own art, too!

Art Viewer

In the Art Portal and in your feed, clicking a piece of art will open the full-size version in your browser. Some pieces are really big and the browser scrollbars aren’t a great way to move around, especially horizontally. This has been frustrating when people make massive character collages and you want to explore but it’s not easy to do.

That all changes today!

Now when you click a piece of art, it will resize to fill your browser dimensions. Use the scroll wheel on your mouse to zoom in and out, then click and drag the image to move it around on your screen. There are also buttons to toggle zoom in, zoom out, screen-size and full-size.

You can also double tap anywhere to zoom in to that spot. If you want the buttons out of the way, stop moving around for a moment and they will fade out.

Pixel Art is given unique treatment, in that it won’t smoothen the pixels and it will allow you to zoom in larger than the original image size, since sometimes people want to really examine those pixels. This is a good piece to try that with:

Next up: We’re finally migrating the Art Portal into the Project System, which will introduce features like multi-author, scheduled publishing and the option to list what tools you used to create your art. Once THAT is done, we plan to properly address full-quality multi-image uploading, so you don’t have to depend on the text editor for your secondary images.

Here are some large art pieces you can explore!

Everyone thank @PsychoGoldfish for the art viewer!

ooo that's pretty cool update i guess :)

atho, i actually tried to zoom in and out using my computer mouse wheel and it didn't work, i'm using firefox btw,

atho other options/buttons do work lol it's just that pressing computer mouse wheel in order to zoom in and out is not working for me for some odd reasons (or maybe it's because i didn't understand something xD)

I may not be the brightest in the box full of light-bulbs, but that doesn't mean I can't light the way in this dark world.

(you can call me wilson or mawi if you want, I'm also the one who made skibidi club.)

Looks cool!

But I think it should be easier to exit viewing - Escape key and clicking outside of the image should exit, IMO. I think that would be more consistent with other platforms.

This is AMAZING!! It's lovely to see the art portal receiving upgrades, I know a lot of people have been asking for it! The Art Portal receiving the Project System treatment is personally very exciting, I hope this encourages more art colabs, always love seeing those! Multi-image uploading is also super exciting, can't wait!! Awesome job!!

Finally, my pixel art remains crisp.

One question: How do you(or I guess the AI) recognise pixel art to upscale?

It's based on how the author categorizes their piece under the project details.

Esc key will likely get plugged in with some other keyboard shortcuts. Josh added in the ability to click outside the image now. Was worried people might accidentally close images too often but it will probably be ok.

I would prefer if the zoom feature for pixel art was restricted to integer values (2x, 3x zoom etc). With zoom levels in between these you get a warped, inaccurate look, even when using nearest neighbour upscaling (at the very least there could be a way to quickly jump between these zoom levels). This idea would bring the feature more in line with what is available on a pure pixel art website like Pixel Joint.

(Overall this is a really cool change though, just not for pixel art nerds like me).

If you double tap the image instead of using the scrollwheel, you should get the zooming you described. Let me know if that isn't working for you that way though, I know it was the intent at least! I think we had talked about that for the magnifying glass buttons, too... Will look back into that.
