2022 Highlight - Flash Forward Jam
This year marked our second annual Flash Forward Jam, an event where people make new Flash games that still run in the browser, thanks to Ruffle.
Ruffle is an open source Flash emulator created by @Mike and now managed by a whole team of brilliant developers who have taken up the mission of preserving Flash in a way that is free and open. Currently Ruffle has strong support for AS2 and is in the early stages of support for AS3, as was announced in August. All pre-2006 Flash games were developed with actionscript 2 (AS2), while it has been a mix of AS2 and AS3 ever since.
Because Ruffle didn’t start supporting AS3 until this year, all of the Flash Forward entries have been developed with AS2. For Flash Forward 2023, expect to possibly see some basic AS3 games in the mix!
The winning game this year was Portal Defenders: Tower Defense, by @BoMToons and Luis.
It’s a sort of follow-up to Portal Defenders, which was released in 2009 and also works in Ruffle!
Second place went to Bird on Bird by @Starblinky and @TheGarbager619. It’s a really impressive game that has gotten some big post-jam updates. If you only played it during the jam, be sure to revisit it!
Third place went to Family Tech Support by @FuturecopLGF. Another highlight of this year was the monthly videos by FuturecopLGF, where he plays every game and gives feedback. It makes me realize, we could use an option to make a playlist of blog posts!
In the interactive movies category, first place went to a silly chicken racing game that always leaves you guessing what will happen next.
There was a great collab by @Mabelma; a vending machine filled with collectible treats by various artists!
Another big highlight, NG dev @PsychoGoldfish joined the party with a classic point and click adventure.
You can see all the entries in our Flash Forward 2022 collection.
The Flash Forward Jam is really special to me because a lot of people assumed Newgrounds would shut down by the end of 2020 as a result of Flash being removed from browsers. I’m proud that Newgrounds has adapted to the post-Flash world, while also preserving classic Flash content and leaving the door open to new Flash creations!
Here are some AS3 games that started working this year:
We’ll be hosting another Flash Forward Jam in the new year and the deadline for entries will likely be February 28th. If you want to try making a game with Flash, now is a great time to start!
