Prismacolor Comparative Color Pencil Research Thread

New Topic Respond to this Topic

Due to rumors of individual Prismacolor pencils possibly being phased out, I've been trying to find replacements for the 150(+ the discontinued LightFlesh and Metallic Copper) colors. (Best case scenario- I get to greatly expand my palette- and who doesn't love more colors?)

But it's turned out to be a far more difficult task than expected, so I'm starting this thread both to share what I've learned and to see if anyone has any matches or dupes I have yet to uncover.

Pencils I have:

Full Sets:

Derwent Procolour (72/72)

Derwent Inktense (72/72)

Holbien (150/150)

If you have any pencils that are sold individually that match, please let me know.

Current matches: 24/152

(21 from the initial 3 tins)

  • Additional Colors gained: 177
  • Total Colors: 305
  • Basics covered: 9 /34

Additional notes:

  • The Dandelion color from Holbein is the exact color of the discontinued Dandelion crayon from Crayola. This doesn't really help, but it's a nice color at least.

  • Despite having no less than three metallic golds, none of the metallic pencils from the Holbein brand match the Prismacolor brand. The consistency and metallic sheen between the two lines, however, is virtually identical.

  • According to this post, both Lilac 956 and Lavender 934 Prismacolors are being discontinued entirely.

https://thefrugalcrafter.wordpress.com/2022/12/16/2-prismacolor-pencil-colors-are-being-discontinued-here-are-substitutes/. Though I can't confirm this, the suggested matches of Cezanne 27 Periwinkle and Arteza Watercolor Lilac 62 are not as close as they could be. They are in a similar range of purple but otherwise are not very close, but they are both good colors and good consistencies. Maybe these brands have a match elsewhere?

  • Derwent Drawing and Derwent Coloursoft are slightly thicker than usual in comparison to other pencils. The Cretacolor MegaColor is massive. I currently don't know how to sharpen it as it's bordering on novelty pencil size.

  • Koh-i-noor Progresso are woodless, so on the one hand there is more color available to use, but on the other these tend to be more delicate and can break if dropped.

  • For clarification purposes none of these pencils are being used with water. This is especially important to note for Derwent Inktense and other watercolor pencils, as the introduction of water can drastically change the appearance of the pigment.

  • Though not my top priority, I am more than happy to hear about dupes for any other discontinued Prismacolor colors.

  • Though they have the largest range of metallic pencils available that I've ever seen at 50 total colors, matches from Arteza metallic are not very helpful as for some reason they are the only Arteza line that isn't sold individually.

  • The 20 metallic Derwent colors are nice, but do not match the luster of the Prismacolor metallics sufficiently to be a true match. (I still want to get the other eight, though.)

  • Arteza and Cezanne individual color refills are multiple pencils, with Arteza watercolor refills containing three and Cezanne providing six.

  • Koh-i-noor Polycolor and Progresso, and Faber Castell Polychromos and Albrecht-Durer have remarkable color consistency between their lines.

  • Contrastingly, each line of Derwent pencils has a very different color palette.

  • Derwent Inktense also come in block form, which greatly resembles the discontinued Prismacolor Artstix, which were solid blocks of the colored pencil lead useful for filling large areas. (Not to be confused with the chalk pastel lineNupastel, which is doing just fine.)

  • I personally prefer pencils with a consistency closer to Prismacolors- more of a smooth rather than chalky consistency- but I am more than happy to hear of any matches regardless.

Am sorry that I have no pencil compare/contrast data to add...

I just wanted to say thank you for posting this. I haven't touched my colored pencils in decades (literally); had encountered the occasional rumor that the Prismacolors manufacturer was discontinuing certain ones but hadn't read anything definitive until this post. You're doing us traditional artists a service. It's especially valuable in this modern age of most artists drawing with a mouse or stylus & an imaging program...how many artists under 30 even touch paper or pencils anymore?

One factor to consider in finding substitute colors is the binding agent in the pencil's core. Prismacolor pencils are wax-based. At least one other brand uses an oil-based binder, which may work when layering with Prismacolors but I don't know for certain. Any colored pencil that is water-soluble probably won't work with Prismacolors because its binder will be a different substance entirely. This is something to keep in mind when doing your research.

Pen pusher, brush dragger, wood butcher & usual suspect.

You can check out my stuff in the folders here if you're bored at work.

I don't really have other artist colored pencils than prismacolors, but I know dickblick and jetpens carry individual prismacolors, including the ones you commonly use. Jetpens also has some japanese colored pencils which may or may not match any of the pencils that may get discontinued (Dickblick has a lot more though)

On another note, nice to know there's a dandelion color match out there. I never thought crayola's new color was cool, who needs another blue in exchange for a useful yellow?

this is a signature hi

Reminder that my character Tetra is up in the OC plaza too! :}

I personally don't use primacolors but I use spray paints for my mural work, and Montana Colors have this awesome app where you can find any color in your image and it'll give you a list of similar spray colors with their numbers and everything. I wonder if there's such an app like that for PrimaColors. That would be interesting.

It would certainly make things easier.

Planning to acquire and test the Koh-i-Noor sets in the near future.

In the meantime, I have reorganized the existing pencils and prepared and filled out the respective color palette sheets with the colors I do have.

I also filled out a palette with the 12 goldfaber Faber Castell pencils I have.

They will most likely *not* be included in the comparison, but they are useful for a sort of "wash" under a better quality pencil. If nothing else, it's always good to be thorough.

As for the two Faber Castell brands in the comparison, I will be prioritizing Polychromos over Albrecht-Durer, as the palettes appear to be virtually identical, and Polychromos has a smoother texture, which I prefer.

Arteza and Cezanne will be lower priority as restock of the refills seems a bit sporadic, making them a bit less practical(especially since they. are only available online.)

That's all the updates I have for now.

Have a good day.

No new colors as of yet, but after using the Derwents for a proper piece, I feel it is worth noting that they need to be built up a bit more slowly, rather than going straight in to applying a ton of pressure like I usually do- and can do without ill effect- with Prismacolors, Holbein, or Koh-i-noor.

The Cretacolor also needs to be used a bit more patiently, but not as much as the Derwents.

The Derwent Inktense are also a bit more forgiving in this matter than the other Derwent lines I have been testing.

Updated the list with additional matches from the full Koh-i-noor set.
