A prequel story to H.P Lovecraft’s The Thing on the Doorstep that shines more light on Asenath Waite and make her the main character, since it was revealed she’s actually Ephraim Waite(or “Kagmog”) controlling her body and the real Asenath died years ago in her father’s body.
This story would explains how exactly she got here and develop her more as a tragic protagonist in a first person retelling by Asenath while she’s dying, it first starts how for the majority of her youth, she lived in Innsmouth and was forbidden to leave the town for any reason. Her father would take extra precautions to make sure she stays in Innsmouth such as gaslighting, he even one timed threaten to take her to the place where Azathoth lives if she every disobeys him. Although she was isolated, she was homeschooled and attended the local schools in her teen years. The residents of Innsmouth were polite and nice to Asenath but growing up, she never had any friends as many of the residents kept to themselves, this is also due in large part to that she’s a late bloomer and her Innsmouth look hasn’t developed. By the time she turned 18, her father was growing more weak and old and mustering all of her courage, she decides to leave Innsmouth and live a life outside the town after becoming disillusioned with the town. When she turned 19, she attended Miskatonic University but was shunned from her classmates because they knew of her Innsmouth heritage and how weird she looks and acts, for her entire semester at Miskatonic, she was shunned and alienated by her classmates and wondered if it was the wrong choice to leave Innsmouth. But that all changed when she met and befriended Edward Derby in a medieval metaphysics class, at long last, she no longer felt isolated, she finally felt like she belonged somewhere as she quickly developed feelings of him. But because this is the world of Lovecraft, there are no happy endings, for Ephraim discovered that his daughter has disobeyed him and in his anger and dying strength. He tracked down Asenath to the school she attended and proceeded to swap bodies with her, Asenath tried to fight but the deed was done and Asenath lies there on the floor drawing her last breath, as her father leaves in her body thus starting the events of The Thing on the Doorstep.
