When smartphones were just new, I was more excited for the future of mobile gaming, hell I was even obsessed with Angry Birds for a while when I was younger to the point where even seeing bootleg toys of that franchise at markets used to excite just-became-a-teenager me. While much more limited compared to the PC, mobile seemed like a good place for independent devs to experiment and express themselves at the time.
Post-Flappy Bird though, honestly, it feels like the modern mobile gaming industry is full of some of the worst kinds of shovelware right now, whether that's games with predatory or invasive monetization schemes, games that have no real value outside of being as addictive as possible, games that for some reason require unnecessarily giving away all kinds of personal info just to play a single level, or just simply the laziest form of pure content imaginable, which will probably soon enough be entirely generated by AI and shoved onto Google Play for a quick buck. There may be hidden gems I'm missing out on though, but I'll only ever be able to find out about those from word of mouth at this rate.
I use Android at the moment, have no clue if the situation is any better on the Apple side of the fence. In any case, I hope the situation improves eventually, as I would've enjoyed mobile gaming existing more as a portable, complimentary experience to PC or console gaming, like handhelds used to be.
