Multi-Tag Search Update

People sometimes complain that our tag search doesn’t return items that only contain all of the tags listed. For example, if you search the Blue Knight and Green Knight tags, you get art that has just the Blue Knight and art that has just the Green Knight, vs only art that has both.

What they don’t know is we do have this functionality; you need to open Advanced search and click the “Exact Match” checkbox. It’s not very obvious.

Today we added a shortcut to make all that easier. If your tag search contains more than one tag, you’ll now see a toggle to “Require all tags” in the results.

This past weekend Twitter had a rate limiting fiasco that served as another reminder that things don’t always get better or stay the same, sometimes they get worse. Not worse for NG, though, because some new artists gave the site a try!

Twitter will likely be fine but I do think moments like this are a good reminder that a diversity of platforms is important, both to not have all your eggs in one basket but also to promote competition that will make platforms better.

This past decade has felt a bit unfair because large companies dedicated a lot of money to get as big as possible as quickly as possible, making it hard for “realistically budgeted” sites like Newgrounds to compete, or even survive.

The bill has come due for big platforms and that’s a big part of why things are getting worse. Reddit recently made a mess with access to their API as part of a pathway to profitability, while Twitter is also trying to reduce expenses and find more ways to get people to pay.

Newgrounds isn’t immune to this, either; I’ve spent the past decade begging people to become Supporters. I do feel less pathetic knowing one of the richest people in the world is stuck doing the same now.

Whenever events like this happen, people on Twitter start talking about alternatives and their pros and cons. The biggest complaint about Newgrounds is that we don’t have a mobile app, which will remain a complaint for the foreseeable future.

The second biggest complaint is that we don’t have true multi-image support in the Art Portal, which actually is coming as part of the big Art Portal update that has been in development all year. The path has been full of surprises but it remains close! We wanted to migrate the Art Portal into the project system before expanding functionality, which is a lot of what has made this project so big. Here's how it looks on @PsychoGoldfish's dev server:

A question about the multi art option as part of becomming part of the project page, will this also share 2 Project a day limit like with music and animation or that might not be the case?

Just curious why you don't want an app if it's such a big complaint?

The mobile website works perfectly fine for me and even with Reddit I just use the mobile website.

I guess I'm wondering why people find that to be such a big issue and why you don't want an app?

I wish artists would respect more the tags system. It doesn't matter if i block all tags i don't like, they always show up anyway because people don't tag properly..

Great job with the Art Portal update.

Mini-rant time.

I would NOT recommend trying to promote Newgrounds as an alternative to Twitter or Tumblr, especially not after a massive controversial site change such as the temporary rate limit.

It'll only attract the worst types of people on there, the ones who'll a. whinge about anything and everything, and b. refuse to listen to differing perspectives. They do not deserve a site as good as ours and to be honest, It's just more hassle than it's really worth.

Response to Tag Search Update 2023-07-04 14:34:22

The whole "Twitter Exodus" ordeal is going to be interesting because I'm wondering how many of the artists moving over will post to NG consistently. I'm also hoping many of them see the value in NG and become supporters.

No matter what though, more cool art on NG is always a good thing. I just hope the new faces keep that art coming.

Howdy and hello, folks :)

  1. The 18+ content on the site. It would need to be thrown out like GameJolt did, or there would need to be a weird hacky workaround (Telegram).
  2. It’d be another technical thing to manage and keep updated (there was a NG Roku app at one point that suffered the management fate)
  3. It would have less functionality than the website on a mobile device cuz the app stores are very weird about “App Store-likes” i.e. game portals. All the more reason to make the web awesome.

Its an easy mistake to make, but its good to know its been fixed.

It probably won't be the last time this happens. With how Twitter's going, we may see a repeat of what happened with Tumblr's NSFW ban sometime in the future.

If Twitter getting sued nonstop for unpaid rent and Fidelity heavily cutting Reddit's valuation are anything to go by, chances are they're about to pay dearly for being so reckless with venture capital cash and NG is about to find itself on a much more favourable playing field.

Whenever events like this happen, people on Twitter start talking about alternatives and their pros and cons. The biggest complaint about Newgrounds is that we don’t have a mobile app, which will remain a complaint for the foreseeable future.

Getting a mobile app's gonna be difficult for several reasons (adult content being only one of them), and I won't fault you for not wanting to dedicate resources to making one. Pretty much the only way I see this place getting a mobile app is if a third-party dev steps up to the plate.

Its already been said before, but this would be a godsend for webcomics and collabs, and I can't wait to see it.

speaking of Portal updates

actually no, this is so off-topic i can't even segue into it

I know of a lot of people coming over to NewGrounds (at my suggestion, sometimes!) and they really do have unique looks and a lot of talent to bring over, but occasionally they wanna move their entire galleries over, and I just have to be like, "cool well don't submit more than whateverty pictures per month I guess"

This was a cool limit for the Art Portal at one point, and I do like how discoverable people can be on it, but with Twitter specifically coming down, especially after so many "recent" waves from other sites pushing artists away, is there any shot at looking at that again? If it's so Newest Art doesn't get flooded, maybe a "don't submit this to Newest" check..? I know that sounds like a pain to make but it did not sound very cool to have to go "...oh yeah, that" to someone trying to port a gallery. iunno, if that even is the reason

OK KEEP IT UP YER DOIN' A GOOD JOB TOM

Comics I've made in the past use the text function from the Author Commentary section to put dialogue beneath the panels. Will I still be able to do the same (and maybe a little more) with the new multi-image system?

I really liked seeing so many new faces on the front page the past couple of days! I think that it can be a little intimidating to introduce yourself to a new community, especially one that's been around for as long as this one, so it made me happy to see these people get a warm welcome. Even if some of them don't end up sticking around, I hope they walk away from here with a positive feeling.

Creating and maintaining a GOOD app that people don't constantly complain about would cost a lot of money up front and would be a long-term expense to maintain. It would be a lot just to do it for iPhone, let along iPhone and Android.

Once we've spent lots of money and sidelined NG site development to focus on an app, we'd likely be under regular threat of removal from the app stores due to their double standards with what apps can have adult content. Our app would likely block all adult content.

If the app is a success, we'd be rewarded with ballooning hosting expenses. We've never managed to convert a large enough percentage of our users to Supporters, so NG runs at a loss. The app audience would probably get even worse results and if we offered Supporter through the app, we'd have to give Apple a 30% cut. My overall feeling is that a successful app would ultimately bankrupt NG; the goal of an app would probably have to be to sell NG to a larger company after it becomes successful.

Keep in mind, I'm approaching all this from the mindset of someone who has lost money for over a decade and has to make another hit console game to keep all this afloat long-term. If NG had 100,000 Supporters it would feel pretty trivial to hire programmers and designers and get an app going but as things stand now, an app feels like something that could be the final nail in the coffin for NG.

I guess I'm wondering why people find that to be such a big issue and why you don't want an app?

Apps do work better than websites but in an ideal world people would be more down to support the open web and stop letting a few companies control everything.

I'll also note that I picture a crack addict itching at their neck whenever someone demands an app.

the fact that newgrounds doesn't have an app is apparently a decision since if NG had an app it would have had an app many years ago, although newgrounds doesn't have an app in the play store I think the mobile version on google chrome can be considered a mobile version of Newgrounds.
