Closing Thoughts

August was gushing with greatness! I extended the movie runner-up list because there were so many great movies that deserved a spot.

The NG Money Gang has secured the sponsorship of the next Salad Fingers episode, which is anticipated to premier on NG later this month.

August 2023 was so full of great submissions.

Boy howdy, this was a great month of game submissions! Many thanks to all of the game developers for really bringing their A-game to close out summer with a bang: while I always have a tough time narrowing down my favorites to vote on, this was definitely the toughest it has been in awhile!

As said above, competition was fierce, so I do find it understandable that some games didn't get as much notice as others, especially when you got crazy games like Leap Hero from @tkab-games that hides the best part of their game away behind a fake ending (seriously, these devs are nutso)! But I gotta give a shout out to some amazing games that I was shocked to not see placed in the top at all from @EufrasioNuclear and @Sikowny below:

Again, I can somewhat understand as they are both challenging games to grasp and Paraiso, similar to Leap Hero above, hides a lot of content behind hidden endings, but definitely give them a go if you haven't tried (or maybe a second chance if you have)! They're both excellent short and sweet platforming adventures with a lot of depth!

I'm starting to first skip down to the audio section to find a track to play, then go back up to look at the movies/games/art/etc. The Geometry Dash tracks make the experience feel extra great this week

It feels weird to admit, but I guess I've grown up with and on Newgrounds. I think I was 12 or so when I stumbled upon the Assassin game for Family Circus. Yeah, I was one of those edgelord tweens that couldn't help stumbling into the websites I wasn't supposed to. The "game" involved clicking through a lot of slow loading images in html and, at the time, I didn't have a clue who Golgo 13, the guy I was flying a helicopter for, was. But man, when he sniped off little Jeffy's head, I knew there was something special here. I was never active much on the forums or had much to contribute to the Portals (I was there when it became automated!) but Newgrounds was a constant that was always there to stand as a shock to the system, where things could always be taken a little less seriously, where sacred cows could always find a place to be burnt.

Okay, maybe that's a little romanticizing for a website where Teletubbies fucked sheep on the internet. But man, so much of where I spent my early days on the web is gone. There were so many times that Newgrounds looked like it might be gone too. (And not just because Tom was arrested and his cousin Marty was taking over the site... April Fools 2000, man). But you're still here and I'm still here, so I guess we'll keep on clubbing those seals and funking those Friday nights.

(I should have paid for supporter status a long time ago, I guess. But I did buy one of the last rounds of Tankman figures, which is happily placed on the shelf next to me. I'm no longer as big of a Snoopy fan as I was in 1998, so I may take the opportunity to change my handle, but, who knows...)

i couldn’t care much about the votes really, especially if i’m on 47th but i’m still amazed of how my terrible animation gets to include here. It’s not the proudest thing i’ve made except for the Brain Block one but nevertheless, it’s good to see one of my works gets to include in Best of August. :)

Seeing the FNF fangame remake thing in top 5 is definitely a surprise since in my opinion the only good thing from the game was the art and some of the music. Congrats still though.
