Thoughts on your old music? 2023-09-17 07:39:14

I'll go first. Looking back at 2017-2020, despite the poor quality, my music was nostalgic to me. I remember every moment when I was creating them. Back then, the tracks weren't limited by the quality, it was the idea that mattered. That's why I always see my old tracks as "Good idea, bad execution."

"Good ideas" are worth celebrating even with poor execution. If you've got strong musicality and are struggling with mixing, then by God, that strong musicality deserves the time of day.

Staff and mods have picked up on this over the years, because sometimes you get pieces that sound beautiful or hit hard even though their mixing is a bit wanting. Many of my older pieces pre-2019 that did get FPed were FPed under that rationale. If anything, people are listening.

With time your mixing will get better, but so long as you don't forget the heart behind your older pieces with good musicality, then you're on the right track.

This is exactly how my old music is, really interesting and fun musical concepts, but that’s about all they had going for them. That’s why I really enjoy making sequels to my old tracks!

you guys like my tunes?

Heh, I had an entire phase where my music writing was nothing but good ideas - I wrote down my good ideas and never finished the rest!

Someone please help me revive my clubs

My first song was in late 2018, it was a muzak type of song, and it sounded terrible, and i lost it because the hosting site went down and I lost the hard drive. From then to early 2022 everything i made sounds like garbage to me now lol.

I am so glad I forgot the password to my old music channel, cause I would've deleted it out of embarrassment in my teen years; now I go back to it to remind myself how far I have come.

I love looking back at my old material. I was a writing machine back in the day. (over 230+ songs since 2005). I can actually remember how to play each song, just by reading the old lyrics, which astounds me.

I personally really enjoy taking older songs and 'modernizing' them. That's pretty much what I've been doing the last month actually. Taking a couple songs from 2007-2010ish and re-recording/re-writing them with the goal of keeping the vibe of the time they were written, while bringing a more modern-style sounding edge to it. I'm very excited to publish these songs and see what else I can work on in the meantime.

my very first tune i made was back in 2020 (never uploaded) and it was absolutely horrible. i had no idea what a kick drum or snare was so my very first beat i programmed consisted of a very tinny kick drum and a floortom sound. i don't know if i still have that file somewhere, but even if i don't, it's a cringey memory that i won't be able to repress. i guess we all start somewhere, and i like where i am now in my journey and see improvements all the time

I‘ve only been making music for a couple months now, but my very first song is an utter embarrassment to me. I made it back in 2021 when fnf was at its peak and I had no idea what I was doing. It was all off tune, none of the instruments meshed well at all, I didn’t even have a chromatic/soundfont for myself so I used some voice clip of me saying beep. Song was so bad I didn’t try again until November last year with my song Simple and it actually turned out decent because I actually took the time to learn how to make music. If you want to listen to my first ever song… too bad I took down any and all traces of it off Twitter, any discord message, and even my computer and the project file just straight up don’t exist no more

A dumbass

For me, even though I may disagree with several mixing decisions I've made in the past, I still very much cherish even my oldest bits of music!

Lots of interesting musical concepts I wouldn't actively think about today because I was less inhibited by what a "good song" sounded like. I just made songs I thought at the time sounded passable and time advanced to then understand what worked and what didn't!

Ruminating on old works is all part of the learning process!

I have a bizarre relationship with my old music. I absolutely despise it, but the musical ideas are so interesting that I still go back and listen to it. I’m afraid that because I do that so much, it’ll make my modern stuff worse or something. These are songs I made when I was 12, and yet I can still find enjoyment out of them even now as an adult. And they’re all right here on NG on two other accounts.

Well, technically I have been making music electronically since 2004, but I would only show people my post-2019 tracks as they were markedly improved. That said, I feel I had some good musical ideas in those early days, and I actually revisited a lot of those tracks and revamped them when i got better. I did have a period of several years though where I pretty much made crap in my opinion, but some still claimed to enjoy them.

first tracks were garbage and only on one song from my second album and some of the third(and fourth) I feel nostalgic

Honestly? Still love them. I only started making music about a year ago or so, but this one is still my favorite.

Ngl I kinda want to make a remix out of this. I believe it's still salvageable!

My first tracks of this year aren't bad, but they really could use some mixing improvements with what I've learnt

hit or miss, I sometimes recoil when I hear my old stuff but some actually hit, it just needs some more of my newer skills on em honestly

I look back on them and go

Ah yes, I liked this

It's good

And then I notice the mix is shit, so I fix it and update it

Ah yes

It's good

Except when it isn't

But I can count on my fingers the amount of tracks I genuinely feel are not good
