Coming from Oliver Joyce (@hechaos) the acclaimed developer behind Swords and Sandals, is an all-new fantasy adventure - GORGON SHIELD - Coming to Steam Q3 2024.To celebrate that pending release, we wanted to host an art contest right here on Newgrounds!

Gorgon Shield is a party-based RPG, arcade roguelike! Manage your heroes positions, optimizing their ability to fight, heal, and loot - growing ever strong as you ascend a deadly tower atop the mighty Gorgon Shield.

THE CONTEST

• Create a Gorgon Shield themed piece of artwork (any style/medium is fine)
• Submit your work to the Art Portal with the tag gorgonshield by the end of Sunday June 9th, 2024
• (Optional) Tweet your artwork out with #gorgonshield

Other rules:

• Multiple entries are allowed, but you'll only be able to win once
• No NSFW art
• No AI made entries
• Submissions after the deadline will NOT be counted

PRIZES:

Myself and series creator Oliver Joyce will handle the final judging.

• 5th Place: Steam key for Gorgon Shield + Swords and Sandals Classic Collection Key
• 4th Place: GS Key + SaS:CC + Swords and Sandals Immortals Key
• 3rd Place: $50 + GS Key + SaS Keys + 1 Year Subscription to Newgrounds
• 2nd Place: $100 + GS Key + ALL Swords and Sandals Steam Games + 1 year NG Sub
• 1st Place: $150 + GS Key + ALL SaS Steam Keys + 1 year NG Sub

Useful info:

• We will announce the winners through the BBS, as well as on Twitter
• Copies of the game will be distributed to the winners as Steam keys upon release.
• Cash prizes will be paid through PayPal.

Oliver has been been rolling out regular updates to the Steam demo for Gorgon Shield. Hopefully playing that can provide plenty of inspiration! Any feedback you may have for the game is greatly appreciated.

The Swords and Sandals guy! Gotta check this one out! Tried downloading the demo but it crashes on launch unfortunately. Hope i can get it to work so I can get an idea of the game and participate.

I am passing along a quote I say from Oliver where he helped someone else troubleshoot this issue.

On some machines (Win 11 especially) there can be some config save troubles - I *believe* you might be able to resolve it by deleting this folder:

C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming\GorgonShieldData

Let me know how you get on ( and if it's a Win 11 machine?)

Beyond that, the public demo should show off a little bit more of the game to help feed your inspiration.

There's that. But it's up to the artist if they want to share it around. Mostly it's about engaging the Newgrounds community, and trying to give back to a site I've spent half my life on :)

I think you can embed Youtube videos in the commentary of your upload. If your drawing isn't ready to be uploaded yet you can embed the Youtube video here in this thread.

I think that's all around good advice!

Sharing WIP stuff here (like you already did) is very welcome. And adding a link (or proper embed) to your final upload could be a great way to help lead people to it longer term.

Alright. I'm uploading the video to YouTube... it is... going to take a while.

In the meantime, my drawing isn't ready to be uploaded yet but I'm posting my work-in-progress artwork rough ideations (from values and thumbnails to clean up pencils) here in this thread.

The 2D cartoon style painting for the background is almost finished. The next and final step will be finally painting the characters/creatures.
