Me being who I am and enjoying the juxtaposition between innocence and horror, a friend sent this my way and it caught my eye.
Junji Ito and Sanrio are doing a collaboration and will be opening a pop-up shop in Tokyo for a limited time. Here is more information.
We’ve already been treated to a poster featuring Ito’s masterpiece Tomie, decked out in full Hello Kitty merchandise and surrounded by the iconic cat:
Tomie, for those who don’t know the character, is a master manipulator of countless lives, bringing death and violence with her wherever she goes. She is also an inhuman being capable of regenerating infinitely, and even creating copies of herself by assimilating other people’s bodies, or by more direct mitosis such as this:
Personally, I think wearing cute clothing fits her very well. Looking innocent, feminine, and aesthetically pleasing has been part of Tomie’s strategy from the get-go. Perhaps with the resurgence of nostalgia for the 2000s and all things cutesy, she is ready to play puppet master with a truly global audience. I’m excited to see what the pop-up shop has available.
What about you? Are you happy to see this collaboration? Are you unhappy? Let’s hear your thoughts either way. It’ll be fun.
(Also, in the process I found out that Mr. Ito also did a Pokémon collab in 2021. Oh, if only I’d known earlier!)
Someone please help me revive my clubs
